New SG's have a street price of $999 -- used, they're fetching from $680 to $750/$800-ish on eBay.
The street price for a new '65 Mustang RI is $699.
Yesterday, I got a quote from DavesGuitars.com over the phone for a trade in -- they offered $700 for the SG and I'd get a Daphne Blue Mustang RI in return for $699 -- so I'd make $1.00 off the deal. (I'd also have to pay for both ends of the shipping.) All things considered, this is very reasonable deal for me if I decide to go in this direction.
The thing is: this isn't a money issue for me. I can afford to buy the Mustang straight up. But I'm trying to resist the urge to start acquiring guitars just for the sake of growing my collection. I've only been playing less than 3 years, and I'm more interested in finding a couple of guitars that fit me like a glove and playing them on a daily basis. The SG is a gorgeous guitar, and over time I'm sure it'll hold its value well. But for me, it isn't very comfy, and it's hard to see how over time that's going to change.
Well, I did it: earlier today, I called Dave's Guitar in Wisconsin and made a trade for a Daphne Blue '65 Fender Mustang Reissue. I get the Stang for $695 + $20 shipping and they're paying me $700 for my SG Classic + hard shell case. These guys are straight shooters, and I'll do business with them again.
Yep: I'm sure I'll regret parting ways with my "pro" SG. But I'm just as sure that I'll enjoy the playability of my new "student guitar"!
Anyway, to quote a line from a song by The Butthole Surfers: "It's a funny thing about regret: it's always better to regret something you HAVE done than to regret something you HAVEN'T done."

The cool thing about Mustangs is that I'm not gonna feel guilty if I do some sensible mods to it. I'm already planning to put in a straight-routed bridge humbucker (either a Dimarzio Super Distortion or a Seymour Duncan JB). I don't have the tools to do this, but one of my boys is taking a wood working class in middle school -- I'll see if his teacher will let me turn this into an after-school "Father-Son" guitar upgrade project.
I'd also like to fill in the trem cavity with a shaped hardwood block, lock down the trem with some bolts and locktite, and flip the stringer around. And if I can find a wiring diagram, I'd like to split the humbucker with a push/pull tone pot.
Warmouth has all the parts I need, including a new pickguard for less than $30.
Anyway, there's NO WAY I would have ever considered doing this kind of major surgery on an SG. But it's fair game on a Mustang, and if I do it right, I'll have a different level of "Pride of Ownership" with my new shortscale.

Dude. FFS, just don't. Get one of the '69 RI's if that was your game. The 65RI pickups are FANTASTIC and don't need changing out for Humbuckers. Why are you planning to mod a guitar you've never sodding played? Open your bloody ears before you believe what is written on the internet

Nope. You don't need to do that. I thought I might but with 11s it holds tune perfectly.

The SG was overpriced, the Mustang is fantastically priced and an excellent guitar. Don't carve it up.
Agreed with Mike, but I'd like to bring extra light on the whole turning the bridge around thing. That's the single stupidest thing you can do with a Mustang. It's just not right.
It sounds to me like you're doing all of this for aesthetics, you think it'll look cooler with a humbucker, with the bridge looking like some idiot strung it up because he couldn't figure how to do it properly.
Just try it first. If the sound isn't to your liking, or if the bridge is too unstable for your liking, then start taking measures against that. Possible try a hotter bridge pickup or maybe a single sized humbucker, try adjusting the spring tension on the bridge itself. There's a reason why loads of RAWK fans on this forum own Jaguars and Mustangs without humbuckers, and that's because they're just not needed.
