you guys are lucky in that you have to actively seek out music/film/literature from the UK. here we have to actively avoid the american equivalent, since it's rammed down our throats 24/7.

PERSONALLY, I've always been amazed as to how "open-minded" the UK Music scene is.
I mean, here in America, you'd never imagine Jack White hanging out with Britney Spears.
But over THERE, you used to have "fat dancer" Robbie Williams hanging out at Oasis concerts (before the Gallaghers decided to mark him persona-non-grata).
There's so much great Music in the world. While I respect Robroe's opinion, I don't believe in limiting myself based on geography.
I've said it before and I'll say it again:
Is England/Scotland/Ireland/Wales THAT fucking boring that the region CONTINUALLY produces such GREAT bands? Simply coz' there's nothing better to do than pick up a guitar?

i spent a day searching for good fucking english music.
a whole day. i found Dartz!. out of like 100 fucking bands i listened to Dartz! was the best one.
but average joe buffalo or chicago kid isn't going to reference that shit. its not my opinion, its just the way it is.
the only reason i know who Smoking Popes are is because i am fucking old, and they are fucking old, got one of thier songs on a mixtape back in the day and then went out and bought everything i could of thiers based on that one mixtape song. fucking amazing band. and they sound nothing like cold play.

i don't blame kids in the US for not being interested in music from elsewhere, i'm sure there's enough produced where they are that they don't have to be.
that dartz! band sound totally american to me though. put a mid-atlantic accent on them and they could be from new jersey or idaho or anywhere. so if that's the sort of sounds you're looking for then of course the US and canada would be the best place to look.
there's some brilliant bands in the UK at the moment, but wading through the masses of utter dogshit is always a difficulty. i get bored of hunting around on myspace, it can be soul destroying.

Nor did I say that the popes sounded like coldplay. I may be young(er) but I'm not stupid enough to think the two groups are ANYTHING like each other.
The point I was TRYING to make was in reference to HALE. They DO sound like the popes when playing "fast" songs...but the "slower" ones...as well as the band's "image" in Asia...points to Coldplay.
And with regards to what people like and what people hate...well fuck...isn't that what art is all about anyway? Provoking a reaction one way or another?
I may come off as fucking "sunshines and unicorns" when I say that there is a lot of good Music out there...but I'm all too aware that there's a lot of crap floating around the rim as well.
Take the new Killers album, for example. Fucking ABHOR that band. But lots of people have/will lay down their 15 bucks for a copy.
