the jstang definitely led me to being more open on guitar ideas while keeping me from going down the dark path toward pointy jacksons and bc rich's.

i must have been about 10 when nevermind came out, i bought it on cassette. i don't remember that clip from the time but i saw teen spirit on 'the word'. i was into hip-hop by the time in utero came out and wasn't really interested in guitar music much... i didn't start learning guitar until i was 22 or 23, and by that point i was discerning enough to realise strats and teles weren't for me, so shortscales/offsets held most appeal. plus i'm a bit of a vintage snob and they were still vaguely affordable compared to other fenders. i'd say the mustang graham coxon has in the beetlebum video held more appeal for me than any nirvana connection (i'm not a massive blur fan but coxon is great).

I'll be honest, i was more inspired by MBV, Dino, Spacemen 3, etc. using Jags but when Nirvana broke through i was buzzing. The whole image of 'punks with long hair' using Jags and Mustangs was what i wanted to do all along. In truth though he probably did more harm than good for shortscale users in the long run, he made the guitars fashionable which pushed prices up. On the flip side it meant a better second hand market due to guys complaining "why does'nt it sound like Kurdtz? i even got me a DS-1..." and selling their shortscales.

all very true.
However, let's not forget how the nirvana effect has benefitted us.
offset/ss reissue models not getting cancelled.
innitiative for Fender to develop new offset/ss models,
innitiative for other manufacurers to develop offset/ss models,
altough the vintage market certainly puts the buyer at a disadvantage because of this, this has allowed the guitars to meet the recognition they deserve.

I actually didn't know what guitars Kurt used until I went to jag stang looking for tips on setting up my mustang. Never have been a Nirvana fan boy.
My love for the Mustang came from David Byrne playing one on Grey Whistle Test at the end of Psycho Killer. Or what I thought was one anyways.
Also I had this guitar book for Christmas one year and the one guitar I loved the look of the most was the Mustang.

Yea, I started playing guitar during the hay-day of nu-metal bands like korn and rap-rock bullshit like limp bizkit, so everybody was really into the stupid pointy guitars and stuff. And then I was looking through a Mars Music catalog that came in the mail because that was the chain-store that I bought my first guitar from, and I saw a picture of the toronado and cyclone and I instantly fell in love with both of those guitars, and another store in Raleigh had a Squier Super-sonic in sparkle blue, I hated the color but loved the look of the guitar and I have just been hooked on offsets and shortscales and the lesser common fender models since then.
I think it's probably also because the first band I remember liking as a kid was the beach boys.

i won't lie, nirvana sparked my interest in music.
before that all i really listened to was my mom and dad's record collection(peter paul and mary, simon and garfunkel, john denver, ect.)
I heard nirvana firsst before i ever saw a video of them or anything, i thik i had bleach and nevermind on a cassette that my buddy made for me, i swear i must have listened to that for about 6 months before we got cable and i saw the video for heart shaped box.
in a nutshell, i really wanted a jaguar( i had been playing church songs on my moms no name nylon string geeter)
but after realizing that a jaguar was WAY out of my price ranger i heard about the j.s. and found one in canada for 280.00 or something.
so it was pretty darn cheap.
so yeah, nirvana made me get into music and started my passion for guitars.

I was really heavy into shoegaze...and SY during my "loose strings" teenager period; But I fell in love with Jag when I saw Television (Verlaine) and I thought "Man, I wanna sound like that"
