PenPen wrote:I bought the Univox head last night. It sounds fairly good, its rated 100w but sounds closer to 60w, which will do the jorb. It's also not super heavy. Now I just need to finish the 2x12 cab, I'm looking at some Emminence Legend 12"ers.
Nice! 60 through 2x12 is plenty loud.

Yeah I'm thinking so. The head appears to be close to a Bassman, but with more breakup. I have to wait until next paycheck to get the speakers though.

I demo'd the head with the guys 2x12 Fender cab and it sounded ace, but I haven't yet finished my own 2x12. So I was running it through my roommates 4x12 bass cab. It sounded pretty decent but not that loud. Well, one of the new housemates brought his 4x12 Marshall cab with Vintage 30s. OFUCK it really is 100watts and can be heard down the street. I luff this amp.

Yeah, gotta have more power to move those bass speakers. Cool that you're happy with your purchase. I got to crank my DeVille last night, and it was bonarz for days. Fits better than I could really hope for $400 bucks.

Actually I almost got a Deville instead. After someone suggested it I found one on CL also, emailed the dude (no phone #) and he had just sold the damn thing the day before.

I'm glad more people are appriciating the Hotrod/blues Devilles. They, mostly the hotrods, dont get the rap that they deserve. 60watts through a 2x12 or 4x10 with fender cleans(really similar to a twin(but voiced a little more "tweedy" if that makes sense)). The od channel is good in light doses, and okay if its about midnight on the drive pot.

Congrats on the Univox PenPen! good luck with the cab!

It's funny, because it was the last thing I looked at. Fender OD has always sounded weak to me, so I was looking at other combos. Then I changed my thinking and decided that I could start using an OD pedal, which I've never really been a fan of, but as long as I had my Fender cleans, I'd be happy. As it turned out, it surprised me how close to the tone I really wanted the OD was. It's not ideal, but it's close. I'm thinking about doing a few minor changes, like swapping out the tubes for some JJ's cuz they're all Groove Tubes now, and bumping the bias up a little hotter to see how much of a difference it makes. Might still throw in a pedal at some point, I'm not sure. But yeah, I'd have to agree that they're underrated for the price.

Yeah, the main thing about both the Univox and the Fenders is I like the clean. I get my dirt from the pedals I build, I just want a nice clean loud sparkly from the Fenders, and the Deville's that I've tried out have been nice.

New problem, I'm ordering the two speakers today, trying to decide between

Or

Any opinions?

Vintage 30 knockoffs, not bad. I do like the way the one cab I've been using sounds, with V30s in them. I'm still leaning towards something with some more sparkle, though. I'll put those in the "maybe" pile.

Fuck nevermind. The ones are kinda like V30s and I do like how those sound with that amp so I'm getting those.

I love the V30 in my PPC112, it suits the excited mids kinda sound very well.

I'd like something with a tad more bass if I had a different amp though.
