I'm jonesing for a Mustang bass... does anybody know if the Japanese Competition RI 'stang basses have contours?

I've got one in OTM and it's not contoured.

Damn... having contours was going to be my justification for spending twice as much in order to import a compstang bass from Japan. I love the competition OTM like yours... but it would be half as much dineros for me to buy a local one in the white or fiesta red.

Has anybody ever A/B'd the pickups on a reissue versus a vintage Mustang bass? The Japanese ones have a "duncan designed" pickup, but I don't understand what SD actually designed, since their own website says that it's a recreation of the OG pickup. I've never played a vintage one, but the reissues I've tried sounded spectacular.

I've owned/played both over the years, but never did a side by side comparison. It's kind of hard to judge bass pickups given differences in string guages, playing technique and condition of the strings. All in all though I would say they're comparable, at least I've never noticed any huge differences.

Gah! Those vintage comp basses go for wayy to much on ebay.
Though it looks like the one I've been watching is, too. It's at 900 right now - too pricey for me.
