communistic tone galore!!!

Post by Tremolo_Tremolo »

go for the sovtek, amazing tone! especially when you y cable both inputs! total sound gasm

i love my sovtek would never sell! plus it has 4, 8, and 16 ohm for your convenient cab swapping needs.

i got mine for 300. that was two years ago... they will only go up in price when people find out how dope they are.

i once played with a vintage marshall plexi, and the sounds were very close, only the marshall had more presence, but it could of been the cab?

any who mig 50 all the way!

p.s. does anyone know if tubes make a huge diffrence in sound in amps? i have 6l6's on my mig, but have been thinking of trying el 34's for the longest time.

Stop shagging dead threads. I'm pretty sure William doesn't even post here anymore.

EL34s and 6L6GCs are vastly different, are you sure you can fit both to your amp without modification?

Yep, listen to Mike. As far as I know there's a different current draw. 6L6 to el34s is a mod to the amp. I've read things like you would need a resistor swap, socket pin changes and so on.

Another option would be a swap to KT66's. Again, this is a different sound from the EL34's but it will get you close to Marshall JTM45 sounds (like AC/DC). Even that you'll have to check (at the very least a bias adjustment will be required).

A KT66 also draws about 50% more heater current than a 6L6, so you'd have to make sure the power transformer can handle the extra current without overheating.

A 6L6 draws .9A and KT66 draws 1.8A right? Do you know how to determine what's a safe range for a tranny?

Looking at random KT66 specs, I saw heater current in the 1.3A to 1.5A range. (EDIT: yes, 0.9A is typical for a 6L6.)

I don't know how one would measure an "unknown" xformer winding and then calculate its current rating. There may be a way, but I've never needed to try it. Instead I would look around for the manufacturer's specs, and look further to see if the tolerances varied from unit to unit. Also, see if people on internetz have substituted KT66 tubes in identical amps and gotten consistent, safe operation over long periods of time.
