There is no ethical dilemma here.
It's just a guitar. If you want to refinish it, go for it.
Guitars are not shrines, the only value that they have is the financial one that people have artificially given to them. Unless you want to specifically use the guitar as a financial investment, there's nothing wrong with doing whatever mods you want to it.
