Man, this is what I wake up to on a Monday morning. Guess I can't complain, I knew damn well what forum I was making a pissant comment in.serfx wrote:Mike wrote:Kim Deal and Jaff from the Futureheads are laughing at you, MaMo.
Kim is pointing at your cock and making that little finger wiggling gesture.
I'll recant for LEMMY, but I still think a jazz bass sounds best when played with one's fingers.

The point isn't that there should be one or another. Fingers are fine on bass, picks are fine on bass too. It's texture. It's like turning around and saying YOU MUST PLAY IN STANDARD, that's just a stupid convention.James wrote:Although it's not a jazz bass, I'll offer this in defence of Mamo -
To go back to the subject of the bass at the start, is that daphne? I was over 90% sure that I am going to paint my rob(og) guitar in daphne and now I'm sold.
Does anybody still play bass with their thumb? I don't mean in the "slap & pop" fashion, but actually pluck the strings with their thumb? I've never even seen anyone do that, but I figure it must have been popular back in the day, what with all the older Fender basses having the finger rest on the treble side of the strings.
What kind of picks do bassists who use them usually use? I've only ever tried regular ones, maybe that's why I've been a failure in that department?

Sting still does it, as does McCartney. It is a lost style, that's for sure.astro wrote:Does anybody still play bass with their thumb? I have no idea what kind of music you would have to play to look pretentious if you used your fingers. Enlighten me, please.ekwatts wrote:we'd look like pretentious pricks if played with my fingers.

Id just use a fairly heavy pick. I liked to use a 1.75mm pick when I played a friends bass.astro wrote:Does anybody still play bass with their thumb? haha, yea, they're plectrums. Pickins was sort of a silly inside joke we had at Shortscale Boarding house during the time everyone was here.ultratwin wrote:Ah ug yer um....I guess that was the Armenian in me, as I used to play OUD years back before I had to sell it for teh monies. The PLECTRUM used is a funky flat quill of sorts.
If you don't see the upside of both using your fingers and using a pick on a bass guitar for different applications, you're missing out on all sorts of fun.
What we're calling "basses" a large amount of the time are actually specialized electric guitars, I'm sure picks were considered when they were designed.
