Kim Deal and Jaff from the Futureheads are laughing at you, MaMo.

Kim is pointing at your cock and making that little finger wiggling gesture.

Man, this is what I wake up to on a Monday morning. Guess I can't complain, I knew damn well what forum I was making a pissant comment in.

I'll recant for LEMMY, but I still think a jazz bass sounds best when played with one's fingers.

Although it's not a jazz bass, I'll offer this in defence of Mamo -

To go back to the subject of the bass at the start, is that daphne? I was over 90% sure that I am going to paint my rob(og) guitar in daphne and now I'm sold.

The point isn't that there should be one or another. Fingers are fine on bass, picks are fine on bass too. It's texture. It's like turning around and saying YOU MUST PLAY IN STANDARD, that's just a stupid convention.

Does anybody still play bass with their thumb? I don't mean in the "slap & pop" fashion, but actually pluck the strings with their thumb? I've never even seen anyone do that, but I figure it must have been popular back in the day, what with all the older Fender basses having the finger rest on the treble side of the strings.

What kind of picks do bassists who use them usually use? I've only ever tried regular ones, maybe that's why I've been a failure in that department?

I always use a pick on bass. For the sort of music my band plays, we'd look like pretentious pricks if played with my fingers. And it would sound shit. Nothing against it, but it would be pretty stupid.

Sting still does it, as does McCartney. It is a lost style, that's for sure.

I have no idea what kind of music you would have to play to look pretentious if you used your fingers. Enlighten me, please.

Id just use a fairly heavy pick. I liked to use a 1.75mm pick when I played a friends bass.

haha, yea, they're plectrums. Pickins was sort of a silly inside joke we had at Shortscale Boarding house during the time everyone was here.

If you don't see the upside of both using your fingers and using a pick on a bass guitar for different applications, you're missing out on all sorts of fun.

What we're calling "basses" a large amount of the time are actually specialized electric guitars, I'm sure picks were considered when they were designed.
