Noob question:

Would I just cut the cap right out and be done or would i have to solder it back together?

just chop it out with a pair of snippers, takes 2 seconds.

Yea that's what I'm assuming. It sounded way different than mine. I wrote it off to the fact that mine came with flatwounds on it when I bought it. I still haven't changed the strings because it's not my main bass and I love the way they feel, just not the way they sound. But I'll definitely have to check out the snip mod.
