i struggle finding overdrive/dirt pedals that work well with my blues deluxe. anything that i use on the clean channel sounds fine, the dirt channel doesn't respond well to being boosted, tends to get quite shrill. i find that my tone bender fuzz set quite mild works well and gives it a more balanced boost without being too muddy or too bright. i do have and use a tubescreamer, which i tend to use as a boost. it works well for my amp, but i can understand why people love it or not, it's like a few pedals out there. i get quite wary of boutique pedal companies. yes, some of them make some nice stuff but i do find some of the prices a little off putting.

i'd probably recommend a rat or maybe a box of rock style pedal if your after that marshall kinda flavor. i've got a rat on the way for my birthday, which if i don't like i'll probably get mike to mod it.
My bandmate uses Blues Deluxe for couple of years and we tried over 50 overdrive/dist/fuzz units - He swapped stock speaker for Vintage30 and on his board are: Shin-Ei wah-fuzz (for extreme sounds), modified old Turbo Rat (better bass response&less dist) & Korg overdrive OVD-01 - the last one is Ts808 clone - so we modified it to be a bit growlier&bassier but he(bandmate) tends to set it for boost only; The new addition to his board will be Sola Sound Tone Bender markII or III...
what difference did the vintage 30 do? did it kill the high end a bit and give it a little more mids and lows? my deluxe is quite bright. i normally have set with the bass on 10, treble on 3/4 and mids on 5/6. even at that, it can be very bright when you crank it a little.

once again, i'm wheeling out this. old fuller should pay me for all the work i do for him...

Image

most versatile dirt pedal i've EVER OWNED, and i've owned quite a few. honestly, if you can try one out i'm sure you'd be impressed. don't let the 'distortion' tag put you off, the 4 shaping knobs give so much range. gentle grit, crunchy drive, 60's thin fuzz, the lot.

do it. do it now.

it's a great sounding pedal, just wish they were easily obtained without using ebay.

I have been wanting this for awhile. Not playing out in a band anymore I don't really have the excuse but damned if they are not great pedals..

i must admit, i only ever use one or two settings on it live, but you could go into a recording session with this and a big muff and get every sound you'd possibly need.

it responds especially well to a cheeky boost too, gives it a proper roar.

One of the pedals I wish I knew about years before I actually wised up is a treble booster. They do nothing like it says on the tin: get a piss cheap little rangemaster clone (Das Musikding do a kit, or I'm sure Mike would rustle you one up). They make your guitar sound all sweaty and big-bollocksy. You will become Billy Gibbons.

The overall sound became mellower/rounder, the highs are less shrill and between the mids and lows is another dimension...also swapping the v1 tube for 12AU7 helped to mellow it even more and to stay cleaner on preety loud setting.

Well, took my Jag to work... tired out the you dirty rat... felt is was a bit too fizzy for my tastes.

Also tried the MXR Zakk Wylde Overdirve... and liked it quite a lot.

and also the Blackstar Dual which was really nice !!. but I only had a short time to test it out. Big, heavy and expensive though !!

Anyone care to comment on previous post... really considering the Dano Cool Cat drive !! ?? !!

cheers...

I'd get a King of Tone. I hear it's got the wildest, most aggressive overdrive sound.

Before it was revealed that the CEO of Danelectro is a hater of some repute, there was a lot of praise being heaped upon this pedal; pretty sure Mike got one, loved it and demoed it. The answer would seem to be try the Dano, but buy it secondhand so as to not help Dano's sales figures.

Just have mike tape two bluesbreakers together and then overcharge for it. Problem solved. :D

Well, I bought the Dano Transparent overdrive from Mike (thank you !!) and thought it was very good, but somethin' in me still wanted to test out the cool cat drive... so I have also purchased one of them which I received this morning, and have been messing with it for the last hour or so. IMO the cool drive just has more pushing gain in conjunction with the JAG, which I was slightly lacking from the T.O. Very close to the sound I was looking to achieve...however, I'm now wondering how much better an OCD could actually be... Don't think it works really effectively with the classic 30 crunch as I first intended but you can achieve some nice fuzzy, hendrix like tones which I wont grumble about.

I've also got on loan a number of 'Radial' pedals from work... which should be interesting too...

thanks again for the help.

you could try using the transparent overdrive as a little boost before the higher gain OD. works quite well for extra filth.

Yeah, just tried that & it works out well !! Don't have the space on my board nor extra power supply to allow that though.

cheers

I haven't had a chance to crank the amp properly and not for a while now, but am I right in saying that upping the volume on the classic 30... it'd would break up & enhance the intensity gain-wise when the drive is active ?

the drive channels on the hot-rod series suck period, i'm assuming the peavey is much the same - just a big muddy mess - currently i've settled on clean channel, salt-boost to kick the amp into light crunch, old marshall guv'nor for drive (the eq is great for controlling the eventual sound) and a weird huckleberry fuzz for, erm, fuzz. The latter has a knob that allows it to go from fuzz face style to more muffy territory... and nails everything from gilmour to corgan..

did consider the OCD at one point but then got the salt boost instead which adds that nice amount of crunch to the clean channel, without losing definition or pushing the tone into woolly wallowing..
