Im not so sure on that. Way more popular of course but way more common. Its virtually impossible to pick up any Cyclone in the UK, which imo would give it the edge on resale value especially if he hangs on to it for 5 years.

A Stratocaster-style tremolo will result in a stratocaster-style sound. The bridge and neck/body construction has a huge effect on the way a guitar plays and sounds. The bridge humbucker doesn't seem like enough of a selling point to make the Cyclone worth the trade.

I only bring in the guitars' value into the argument because this guy was 'settling' for something less than what he wanted. He already said he couldn't get a Jagstang/Mustang. I was simply trying to encourage him to save up for one of them, and selling a Strat would get him closer to that goal than losing $30 on a cheap simulacrum that sounds essentially like the guitar he traded in.

Its got him in the right ballpark without spending, good for him. Also its a great guitar to modify... he could hardtail that trem and drop a phat 'bucker in there without guilt.

But your not convinced are you. Do we need to put him up in front of the committee to review his membership here?

This seems an awful lot like offset talk to me...

If he plays it and enjoys it... it's the right guitar for him. And just look at the fucking thing, it's a beaut. The moneys may not add up but since when does that matter?

I've invested almost a hundred bucks into a teisco project I'm working on. A fricken teisco, it's cost me $90 to begin with. I'm in waaaaay over the value of the guitar, and I've decreased it's resale by altering it. the moneys really don't work out at all, but... I'm havinga ton of fun doing it and I'll probably play the fuck out of it. so in my eyes... it's all fair.

Funny you say that, since my non-conformity seems to be drawing a lot of ire from you guys.

Just remember, it's a message board meant to display [dissenting] opinions.

And I bet this teisco sounds nothing like the other guitars you own, right?

Again, I repeat: Value was only mentioned because this guy was settling with the Cyclone and not getting what he really wanted.

In fairness, I think it's a poor trade too. I just think that all the stuff Aeon spouted about necks and bridges was a load of shite.

Dont worry about it, i know about non-conforming. Im that guy that likes EMGs, BC guitars and Floyd Roses.

You have some points but most of it is irrelevant, he wanted a shape but does'nt have any money- he got what he wanted. I would'nt mind a Yamaha SG2000 but my bank balance says stick the SG200 model, you do what you can you know?

Then the Telecaster J5 and the new classic player Tele with the Strat trem is just a strat? I think not, pickups make more difference in the sound than the tremolo. And the proper placement of a bolt-on neck gives the guitar the same amount of sustain as a set-in. And the scale is really the most influential part of a guitar, The 24 3/4 inch scale gives less total tension, causing the bridge humbucker to get a slightly over-driven sound, and the bridge humbucker is still quite bright due to placement. All my guitar is really is a jag-stang with a slightly longer scale and a 3way switch instead of on/off/out of phase switching.

i should mention that my jagstang sounds FUCKING AWESOME with a sjag-1 in the neck with nothing in the bridge position, musicmaster style

anyone who says jagstangs sound muddy have never heard mine. its plinky as all hell <3

"Strat sound" is that glassy bell like sound. If you need a reference, listen to Sultans of Swing by Dire Straits. A hardtail Strat sounds just as much a Strat as any other Strat.

That said, the Fender student body is my favorite shape and what I prefer to play, and I have three of them. I see the POTENTIAL of these Squire Cyclones as EXACTLY THE SAME AS THE SQUIRE 51. Only with a nicer (to my eyes) body shape.

By Aeon's logic I should love a strat as much as my mustang, given they're basically the same. BUT I DON'T.

The strat sounds too harsh, the upper bout is too wide (for me), and 3 PUPS screw up my fingerstyle (too crowded). I also ALWAYS HIT THE FUCKING VOLUME SOMEHOW.

Mustang fits my body, sounds more mellow, and has a nice gap for my right hand - WINNAR.

You're not following my logic.
-The Mustang WON'T sound completely like the strat due to the difference in bridge/trem construction.
-Aesthetics and comfort are an entirely different topic, and not something that I argued for/against. I was merely talking about how the guitar will sound, and in terms of a Cyclone compared to a Strat, they are very very similar.

Me too. That bastard volume knob. :x

Jags and Stangs rule, knobs out the way and no middle pup that no-one ever uses anyway.

my jagmaster has a strat trem, and is shortscale, and has humbuckers. it doesn't sound like a strat. it sounds like a les paul. it has great sustain for a bolt on, but your logic doesn't really fit. the pickups do make the sound.

p90s sound different clean than humbuckers, and single coils sound different than lipstick tubes, regardless of what guitar they're in. it may vary a bit as far as trem, but a mustang with a humbucker wouldn't sound different than a tele with humbucker. maybe slight jangles from the bridge, but it's minuscule at best.

your logic fails, dude.

When I say 'sounds like a stratocaster', I mean the way the string sounds and decays, regardless of the pickup. I am NOT referring to the glassiness associated with single coil pickups, because you can achieve some glassiness in any guitar if you have single coils installed. OBVIOUSLY different pickups sound different.

But no, your bolt on guitar with a strat trem and humbuckers does not sound like a Les Paul, because a Les Paul has a different note bloom and decay due to its construction. Maybe it would sound like a Les Paul if it was set neck, tuneomatic, and had a mahogony body with maple cap. Otherwise, no, the overall character of it is something that sounds like a bolt on with a strat trem.

I don't see how you all are misunderstanding what I'm saying.
