try a vintage 30 in there, it is a louder speaker rated at 100db, where as the goldback is rated at 98db (i think)
i don't think revalving and rebiasing will make any difference
Are you calling Doog a n00b?chisa wrote:i don't think revalving and rebiasing will make any difference
it may work, but i think it will just change the gain structure rather than make it produce more volume.Fran wrote:Are you calling Doog a n00b?chisa wrote:i don't think revalving and rebiasing will make any difference
Im getting confused now.
You sir, are correct.euan wrote:I'm pretty sure it is the efficiency of the speaker that makes it louder not the rating.
You'll actually need E84Ls, I forgot that model ran on EL84s rather than EL34s. http://www.watfordvalves.com/product_detail.asp?id=878 pour examplé.Fran wrote:yeah, its a 401. Last time i messed with it i knackered a few valves.Doog wrote:It's a Marshall DSL401 combo yeah? Becaaaaause, the bias tweak on the TSL/DSLs is a piece of piss, mate- seriously. All you need is a multimeter and a small screwdriver.Fran wrote:It was at head height last night, the stage was so small i played on the floor in front. I always do elevate it as its pretty much useless on the floor.
That is an interesting solution Doog, never thought of that. A full valve change and bias tweak, hmm, out of my depth there. I suppose that will knock me back £100.
Sooo... what/how many of them valves do i need Doog? You can guide me through this and if it all goes wrong its YOUR fault

Eurotubes wrote: E34L
Factory description: Gold plated control grid for improved fidelity. Special plate alloy improves plate dissipation as compared to the standard EL34 resulting in stable performance at higher power levels.
My observation: This tube has about 20% more head room than the standard EL34 and it also has a deeper, tighter low end. The E34L is also a bit punchier and more aggressive than the standard EL34 which makes it a Great tube for Matchless, Bogner, Carvin, Peavey and all Marshall amps. I have them in one of my old SUNN heads. Incredible sound! The E34L and the JJ KT77 are the only EL34 type tubes that I have found that will stand up to the 700 plus plate volts found in the Musicman HD 130 amps.
that just says that it has more headroom, not that it is louder. i dunno though. as for the speaker the efficiency is measured in dbs as i said above.Doog wrote:chisa wrote:i don't think revalving and rebiasing will make any differenceEurotubes wrote: E34L

generally it is used to describe how much volume you can get out of an amp before it distorts.Doog wrote:Well, what do you describe "headroom" as being then?
