robert(original) wrote:i forgot to mention that i took my heat gun to the pup covers to make them look a bit older, instead they look like shit.
my goal is to try again, and get a big peice of metal brass sheating stuff to make guards like the one i made today and sell them on the evilbayz.
i should mention i had to flip the bridge pup to get it to fit properly, but yea, thats the same difference between the bridge and the bridge pup.
Robert,

What kind of pots does the Duo Sonic have?

Did you test what the pickup output was?

I'll take your old metal pickguard if you don't want it.

robroe wrote:to astros idea.....even a duo II pickguard without the slider switch holes. you would have to route the guitar out for those i think

you could just put the toggle in place of the TONE knob and have 2 picups, 1 vol, and a toggley on the plate

let me draw this up
You'd definitely have to route the body for the slider switch cavity, so just omitting the upper slider switches would be ideal, in my opinion. You could just put a toggle where the stock one is. It would make for easier on-the-fly switching while playing. I'm guessing it wouldn't be too hard to make a duo II bridge fit, but would the control plate work?

Maybe it could be made to have an all plastic bronco/late 70's musicmaster shaped pickguard, that could look pretty cool (especially in black).

Hmmm... I'm really tempted to get a Squier duo to try something like this out... thank god I have no idea how to make a pickguard because that's what's going to stop me from buying a guitar for my collection that I don't need (but so desperately want).

My Musicmaster II has the routes for the slider switches, when I got a second pickup for it I didn't use those routes , I installed a toggle just where yours is.

From what I'd read, many people didn't really prefer the sliders, or the out of phase setting they facilitated.
I was already used to a toggle switch, and it just seemed more efficient to me.

Assuming the pots values are the same, Could I take an s-1 switching pots out of a Tele and put them in the Duo Sonic. I could replace the 4 way blade pickup selector with a 4 way toggle switch?

the pots are 250, small bastards, but they are smooth as hell.
i was thinking about making a switching system like the lead 3, but wire it up like a mustang.
the stock pups are pretty good.
i will not lie, they are good, i was suprised cuz usually when people say"the pickups are decent, im going to keep them" i automatically think to myself, "they sound like ass, i need to replace them."
the og guard is damaged, and plus i need it to make another template, my first wasn't good enough.
gotta find sheet metal.....

The pots in the s-1 switching are 250K pots!

Instead of wasting money on a S-1 switch, you could use a push/pull pot.

I have seen those, but I was actually looking for a 4 way toggle switch. Not sure if one exists

I'll wait and see how mine sounds, change does'nt bother me and those that say it 'looks' wrong need to get out more.
If its shite i'll either flip it or fit a single P90 with a new sp.

the jimmy page sig. les paul custom has a 6 way toggle.

if you can source one of those, you should be good.

really? I always thought it had a standard 3-way toggle with all four pots being push-pull, one coil tap, one master parallel, one series-parallel and one phase switch.
on jimmy's main '58 Les Paul, which he got from Joe Walsh in 1969, the bridge pup tone pot was replaced with a push-pull knob for (i think) coil splitting
this guitar was reissued by the Gibson Custom Shop from 2004 to 2007, as closely as possible. This guitar also now has a black uncovered pup in the bridge.

On his "Number Two" '59 Les Paul, he replaced the bridge pup with a white coiled PAF style pup, put two push-pull knobs for coil tapping and wiring all four coils in parallel, and then had two switches underneath his pickguard which did the series parallel for each individual pup and did the phase switching.
this guitar was reissued by Gibson from 1995-1998 as the Jimmy Page Signature Les Paul, but featured four push-pulls as described earlier instead of the two switches.

both guitars have necks that are the standard size and shape of a Les Paul near the headstock and body, but taper very thin in the middle.
both guitars also have non-stock Grover tuners installed.

but, i wrote that all from memory, so i could be wrong.

The Jimmy Page Les Paul CUSTOM is a 3-pickup black beauty with bigsby, not his late 50s burst sig. It's based on Page's first les paul that he had when he was a session player before he joined The Yardbirds, he used it for early Led Zep performances but it was stolen.
I never knew it had a 6-way toggle, though looking at this pic now it seems the toggle ring is labeled with 6 options. Nahhht bahhhd.

That's incredible! I didn't know they made a reissue of that one! That's probably my favorite of his 'Pauls. That thing is freaking beautiful!

Whoever stole that thing is one lucky mother f-er!
