get him the best clean sounding amp he can afford and a metal zone pedal. providing a setup with SHTLAODS OF FXS that all sound of ass only contributes to the wealth of idiotic n00bz who know nothing about how tone works. if/when the kid decides to wander into sound with mids and. . . MUSIC, he won't be required to ditch his entire setup again. this combo will also allow him to add pedals as he wants and control them conveniently with his sneakers instead of twiddling knobs on the amp (which is a pain in the ass when jamming w/ others).
YES you can achieve better with a clean tube amp and the individual effects but cost would kill you by the time you get every sound that the spider can
PLUS IT HAS WHAMMY SETTINGS, COME ON FOLKS!

+1, I tried explaining this to a friend, he bought a spider, now that he wants to play different music he's looking for a valve amp.

Alright, so assuming $85 for a MZ, what's a cheap clean amp that takes pedals well?
Keep in mind that this stuff has to be obtained by a 54yo grandpa who isn't internet-savvy.

Windsor doesn't make anything even resembling a clean at any setting.

if you get the kid cheaper stuff now he will appreciate the grey poupon stuff later.
i'd say get the kid a Peavey amp AND a Metal Zone. or the Orange 30R. ($200 & yeah it's solid state & madeinkorea BUT he can get a tube amp when he goes to college.)

I'm trying to get rid of mine at the moment, but for the price it's a great amp at bedroom volumes and an okay-ish amp at gig volumes. It has a load of different sounds which I found useful until I started to get more into using pedals.
ive got one. trying to get rid of it too. cant abide by modelling amps, i want something real.

Crate GT212,
great solid state, cheaper than the peavey bandit, way louder. The cleans are great, and the overdrive channel has a great low-gain sound when you tweak it just right. The 'solo' channel is super high-gain. You can get one for less than 500(Canadian), a great amp for starting a band. When I do upgrade to a fender tube amp I would have no qualms about splitting my signal into this amp ..

there's no saying that good cleans HAVE TO come from a tube amp any more than overdrive HAS TO come from tubes. i like the sound of a roland jazz chorus just fine.

Roland cube 20x has nice clean sounds and they also have a metal and metal stack effects setting. These amps can be gotten anywhere. Found this vid on the youtube.

I woulda loved my little Zoom amp as a beginner; it's like a multi FX stuck inside an amp in a good way. Most of the distortion modes are pretty damn good, especially the Marshall, Boogie and Peavey types.
