We're talking about someone that spent $2500 on a Mustang. $2500. On a Mustang. I doubt someone would spend that much money on a guitar they don't have some sort of intention on using.

anyway, i've kind of lost track of what point you're trying to make.

i suppose it all comes down to motivation and buying into the marketing. Whats the difference between a 1968 Mustang and a 1969 Mustang? The stripes on the paint job and some contours, but market it as "Competition" and it makes it more desirable, because people by into that, myself included. Like there is a perception that competition orange is rarer than competition red or blue, i don't necessarily think that is the case, well at least for the righties anyway and we now know that Competition Orange was around at least until 1971 and in non matching headstock varieties, but at the time it was on my list so no expense was spared.

Like back in the day, I was keen on mustangs with neck dates up to 1971. Wasn't open to anything later. but a decade later i now have a strong desire to pickup a late 1979/early 1980 mustang and i can't explain why.

Anyway, the bigger mystery is to me, you have a Mustang and a Strat both made in Fullerton. The same people working on the assembly line, the same wood the same routers, spraying paint from the same gun, the same quitting time on a friday afternoon. yet one goes for $1,000 today, the other goes upwards of $50,000. its all about buying into the dream that keeps the planet ticking.

I guess the real question is, is a 1950's Gibson Les Paul sold for over $300,000 more playable than the Hanna Montana washburn electric i picked up for 30 bucks?

i really wish Fender had of done the BECK mustang in Competition Blue for the Kurt reissue.

I love the BECK series Anime and Manga. Wish i could buy the BECK Mustang & Telecaster over here.

what you have to keep in mind w/ the vintage comp stangs as well, is that while those two are very, very similar, there was a lot of change from one comp stang to another.

I went to Rodvonbon's place and got to play all of his and it's amazing how every single one was different. from the size of the neck to the location of the stripe. I ended up getting one of the guitars and it has a pretty chunky neck, on the other hand, the neck on another friends and several of Eric's guitars are pretty skinny.

That's a really good point. My Mullet-stang has a 1969 Mustang neck and you would think the neck on my 1969 Comp-stang RI (MG69) would be similiar profile but they aren't . The nut on the Comp-stang is much smaller and the neck feels thicker while the Mullet-stang's neck feels almost like a Jaguar neck. I know expecting a vintage neck to match a RI neck might be asking a lot, but I am surprised considering the reissue is from the same year.

The specs on the 69RIs are all over the place, they're nothing like vintage compstangs.

I'm not sure the vintage ones had any specs, or I should say the tolerances were all over the place. I've owned and still own quite a few vintage Mustangs and they all vary from one to another.
Of the 3 comp orange Mustangs I've had, all '69 neck dates, they may as well have been 3 completely different makes of guitar with the same features. The orange over blue one has a huge ball bat neck and the body seems thicker than others. The prison guitar was fucking sweet. Thin body and a thinner contoure on the back of the neck, although that could be from all the wear. My favorite orange is just right. Perfect neck, perfect body thickness and contours. My only complaint about it is, its just a bit too light in weight. To me it's second only to my beat up blue guitar, that I've talked about ad nauseam, but still no other Mustang will ever compare to that one. The other vintage comps I have don't get played too often, so I can't really comment on them other than to say -
they are all completely different guitars and no two feel or play the same, even though I do identical setups on all my guitars.
For the Japanese reissues I have a comp red, blue, Capri and fiesta. I can say without a doubt the red and blue ones are subpar, both in how they feel when playing and the over all quality of the construction.. The fiesta red and Capri orange may as well be the same guitar. It seems they put a little bit more into them and they feel a bit more substantial (if you get what I'm saying). My guess is that the Beck is cut from the same mill as the fiesta and orange.

Okay I'm drunk and watching hockey. Don't know if any of this is relevant or makes any sense.
Figure it out and get back to me...
