throw away the ds-1 and get a sd-1. much better sounding, much more versatile pedal. very good for lead tones and a lot of other stuff.

...or better still, move away from Boss for your overdrive and distortion tones. Especially the Ds1 and 2, those are particularly terrible pedals.

i use a ds-1, and i find i can't get a better sound than it. regardless of the shit talked on them, it's a fucking rock box. ds-2 is nice, but i find it to be not dirty enough.

jagmaster > ds-1 > peavey cleans = :D 2 me

I used to have a DS-1, loved it for the good cheapness of the pedal, it was nice for a solid 3 months of bedroom play, it started bugging, so I got rid of it. A year later I got a RAT, it was love for awhile, I used it almost for a year. Then I got a Big Muff, and basically said "Fuck you rat!" and threw it off my board, the Rat was way to rough and flat, kind of dull to my ears when I got my Muff. I recommend the Big Muff.

You basically have to rely on the amp to make it sound good- through a nice warm amp, they're just about usable- through a beginners solidstate amp, badly dialled in, they sound like SHITE.

RATs however generally sound more pleasant through whatever you stick 'em through.. probably because there's some/more of the clean signal coming through.

+1

that also surpised me about the ds-2, i found it to be less hard edged than the ds-1. In both modes.

JSutter wrote:Have you tried using the VK's dirty channel? That should sound good enough, at least far better than a DS1. There are a few quick tricks with that amp to changes its tone. Check the peavey bar and grille for the info.

Hey is the DS2 any louder than the DS1? Is there any tonal difference between them when not in turbo mode?
I havent tried the vk dirty channel...
Every effect i have comes from a pedal.. Like Opeth, they are turning every buttons on, 0 and then take out the effects from their pedals.. And Opeth have a good distortion sound on their records!

I think the main sound sound in that song is the Superfuzz, tho i think Steve uses
a big muff so you'll get some Mudhoney tonez.

I always recommend the Marshall GV-2 Guv'nor Plus.

It's pretty much the same price and sounds unbelievable.

I think you would really like the Sansamp GT2... or the Behringer equivalent...

you can achieve a really fat saturated high gain tones out of that without even needing buckers... the californian setting is great for that Joe Sat kinda fing.

Prob a bit shreddy for you but you can get an idea....

Also offers some nice low gain functions too...

+1 to above.

I can't speak for the sansamp but the behringer version is fucking awesome. With plenty of volume on tap aswell.

It's a pedal, not an amp. It can sound like many different flavours of distortion or overdrive
