not sure what the cops would do but i'd be tempted to notify them before you go steaming in there. or maybe not, just take a couple of mates and a baseball bat... but you don't want to end up getting arrested yourself.

Just ring the police where you filed a filed a compalint and tell them that you know for a fact who has your guitar. Tell them you are going over to colelct it before he sells it on and ask them if they'd like to join you

Hmmm, this is a judgement call, really.
I wouldn't get the police involved because of the way I would handle this. They might tell you not to do anything about it.

My first inclination would be to stomp him out... I'd fuck him up... but I'd go to far, or his flatmate/mom/girlfriend would call the police and next thing I know I'm doing Porridge.

This really fucking sucks, are there any distinctive marks / dings on the guitar so you could be sure it's yours? If you go to see him and it turns out that it isn't yours...you'll look like a bit of a dick. Plus you have to think about repercussions, you go and take your guitar back and rough him up and you might wake up with a flaming rag through your letterbox or something (maybe I've watched too many films). On the other hand, the police will likely do nothing without evidence.

Wow, well good on you for keeping your composure and congratulations on getting your guitar back. I would definitely update the police on what happened... at the very least they will rattle this fucker's cage a bit. Maybe you should ask to speak to a detective inspector? I wouldn't let up, squeeky wheel gets the grease and all.

get yourself a UV pen and mark it somewhere out of sight (or it'll show up in direct sunlight). there's also an insurance company that does reasonable cover for musical instruments against damage and theft that occurs outside your home (i.e. the sort of thing your contents insurance won't cover). i think they're called endsleigh. one of my friends used them and when all his gear got nicked in italy (including a few 'hard-to-estimate-the-value-of' vintage synths) they coughed up quicksmart.

Might sound obvious but for the grease try some multi surface antibacterial wipes, I use them on my guitars and then dry it off with kitchen roll and they seem to do the job pretty well. Not that I get grease on my guitar but occaissionally some undesirable will have a go of it. Glad you got the guitar back.

or something like dish soap should be able to cut the grease.
