You're getting shit because the Tubescreamer is one of the most hated pedals ever. It is your problem. Trust us.

Get a clean boost instead. It will actually drive your amp and not color your sound and cause you to speak retarded and spend retarded amounts of money.

And get a fucking Hiwatt. It's the amp you are describing.

Also, I play in a minimal noise rock band a la Jesus Lizard, Shellac, Dazzling Killmen, etc. I go for the high toned grating sound. I get this using a custom low gain Rat with asymmetric clipping, and an 86 Rat at about 10 o clock on gain, filter all the way down, and the volume all the way up, into a Fender Twin, and it does the "harsh" sound extremely well. One Rat is more grating overdrive, the second Rat is for heavily distorted parts.

The Bassman you have is completely fine, honestly. Just get rid of that horrid fucking Tubescreamer. Albini uses a Bassman IIRC, and a GOOD PEDAL.

tube screamers are fine for plenty of playing styles. if you're playing heavy chording and stuff of course, that's not what you're looking for. but if you're doing melodic lead stuff or arpeggiating it sounds great. the stone roses = tubescreamer. I also think it tames the flabby low end of humbuckers quite well. of course if you don't play these styles or use humbuckers it seems like a crappy pedal but it actually works well in a lot of situations.

What is your question? He wants a noise rock tone if you read the rest of his posts, Albini, Jesus Lizard (duane denison is the guitarist for Jesus Lizard), Omar.

This is my realm, one of the few times I can even chime in on a tone and setup. Tubescreamer is as useful as a pigeons ballsack if he wants the noise rock grating tone. The Bassman is exactly what he should be using.

ah ok, I see what you mean. yeah, a tubescreamer is not gonna be the right thing for this dude.

A. Can you put up a clip of the custom rat? I'm interested in the sound you're describing.
B. I also line up on the HiWatt side if this guy is desperate to increase his penis size via an expensive Amp. Alternatively, I'd be more inclined to look at a Bugera 1990 for an amp with crisp cleans and grit of it's own. The Lead Channel I've heard in Demo's is similar to the Low Channel on my Mig 60, which is great for noise rock. Use the remaining 1500 for a downpayment on a motorcycle.
C. I had a tubescreamer for a day. Returned it immediately. Worst pedal ever. Seriously, ever.

A. Yah, I guess I can tonight.
B. Hiwatt, Bassman, Twin, Sovtek, Ampeg are all great for this sound. Anything clear and clean works great.
C. FUCK TUBESCREAMERS.

If I were looking to spend a ton of money, I'd go with these guys. I dunno if 2k will get you there though.

edit: yeah, looks like 2.5k is the starting point.

They are just bass amps, I haven't looked at the schem but they are likely Bassman clones. They used to be old and cheap and sounded like a Bassman, so they got respect.

no trolling here, i haven't really felt out the forum yet so i'm still working out how to ask questions. i'm far from a wanker, i know a bit of theory and all but i think sweep arpeggios and practicing scales for 6 hours a day is just silly. more of a fan of texture and feel in playing. and as far as snobbery goes, i'd be willing to bet i have less equipment than 90% pf the members here. i make due with what i have, and since i'm going to have the oppurtunity to own something nice i just want to make the best decision. in addition i will just stop trying to explain the tone i am after because all it gets me is lawlz from elitists. last point here, who is really being snobby?

didn't see a lot of the posts, not interested in increasing my penis size, haha. thanks for the tips one the bassman, i have a turbo rat laying around. will that do the trick? sorry if i'm coming off like an asshole, i just feel kind of cornered here. i like the tube screamer, but you may be right, i will remove it from the chain and see that happens.

don't take it personally.

we really don't like tubescreamers 'round there parts.

i haven't even used it in ages, but in my last band (fugazi, botch and converge were the big influences) the tube screamer really helped me to cut through. personally i don't really care. it's kind of silly to mock me for taking an 81 tube screamer for free, i mean shit. i'm leaning towards hiwatt and in regards to the bugerra amps, every one i have played was defective or faulty in some way (broken switches, some didn't even turn on) and those were the floor models. ever since i got a b-52 at-100 as a chirstmas gift when i was 16 (father got a huge settlement) and it shit out on me a month later, i just don't buy into being able to get a real quality amp for that price. i just want something that is going to last, sound great and take a beating. if i have to spend 2 grand instead of 500 and it lasts 15 years instead of 1 year, i think it's worth it.

This. No one's attacking you, just your tube screamer.

In general "boutique amps" are just an opportunity to show off the size of your wallet. You can generally do the same or better for alot less. I was far from attacking you, more advising that rather than fall for brand hype you should look at cheaper options and if nothing fulfills your needs step up the search from there. go straight after a booteek specifically seems a bit silly to me when there are so many quality options out there ranging from vintage to budget to standard consumer. Then again I'm a budget player, I loooooove getting my tone out of the cheapest gear possible.
