I had a 98ish standard jazz bass(MIM) and I really thought that the pickups were pretty good. I still switched to emg's though. I like the larger variety of tonal options available with active pickups in basses, generally. Exceptions being ric's or some of the more niche basses.

I'd say that the 10 bucks is probably worth the gamble. I can't play bass anymore(fucked up left elbow) but when I did, I preferred the feel of jazz basses but I find them to be a little too nasal in the bridge and a little too muddy in the neck.

I'd say they're probably the same. The MIM I have the most familiarity with was about a 1998-2000 but I doubt pickups from a few years earlier will be better. It seems silly to buy a bass for $190 because it's a good deal even though the pickups aren't very good, and then to buy another set of the same pickups because they're only $10.

Great point. I guess to figure out if their any different at all would require more effort than it's probably worth. Especially when there are enough options out there that'd be upgrades for sure.

I'd be shocked if you can't scour ebay and clist and find some cool pickups for cheap.
