sounds like what i'm looking for. whats the drive channels like? i'd be kinda thinking of setting it crunchy and boosting with a od pedal.

Lovely old skool Marshall stuff on channel A (clean/crunch depending on the push button). Channel B is a thinner, brighter affair much like hotrodded 800 and 900s. B really shines with humbuckers at gig volumes, takes on a much thicker tone.
They work great on their own, but the shared EQ makes switching between the 2 channels live problematic because of different characters of the channels. HOWEVER, stick the right preamp tube in the V1 position, it can sort this out nicely:

fuck that sounds lovely. really tempted now.
i think it'd be really versatile for the cover band stuff. you can pretty much get any kinda sound going, classic rock, heavier stuff etc

that'd be brill. i think i missed the DSL, cause me and fran went on the sunday. think it came out after we went.
been going through some youtube videos, one guy has done a strat and amp demo and really like how it sounds with single coils. definitely a tweed killer for me.
is it plenty loud? it'll cope with a drummer and bass player and keys with plenty of room to spare?

Yup, I've used it live with loud drummers and 2nd guitarists and it keeps up fine, but doesn't have so much power that you don't get to really open the power section up for LURVELY TONEZ. With the E34Ls, it easily gives enough clean headroom to be boosted over the top of the band for solos.
The only faults are:
The "deep" button (the actual bit of plastic) is missing, but you can can still press it in with your finger. To be honest, there's so much nicer sounding low end on tap with the bass control, you shouldn't need it- I've never used it.
The transformer is a little hummy, but has yet to give me any real problems in nearly 9 years of ownership.
It's occasionally a little hissy (although it's at a "set" volume, it doesn't get worse as you raise the volume") but I think this may just be the current preamp tubes, they've not been changed in a good number of years. I can stick a new set in if need be.
