A real '59 popped up on eBay

Depends ... if I was a football star I'd say hey that thing is paid off in 3 months, so whatNarco Martenot wrote:It's an investment. Sell it again in 5-10 years. I don't think you buy something like this to actually play it, unless you have an insane amount of money.kypdurron wrote:
So now I only must somehow understand how it is possible someone would spend that much money on a guitar ... I mean hey, it's only about 100 vintage Jazzmasters

I don't think these things will necessarily increase in value to be honest. We're living in a changing world, and the economy is very, very fragile, and will be for many years. With the increasing dominance of the Japanese, Chinese and Indian economies I don't think that having a '59 Les Paul can really be considered a dead cert for future profit potential, especially at the prices they're selling for now.
The western world is going to struggle, people just aren't going to be paying top dollar for luxury goods in the medium term future.

I think we've also been riding a guitar bubble the last few years as the now-retiring baby boomers have driven up prices. Eventually, those people will pass.Mike wrote:I don't think these things will necessarily increase in value to be honest. We're living in a changing world.
It's become absurd - Silvertone Twin Twelves going for $1000 and such, despite being barely functional and mostly made of cardboard. Pretty much every guitar from the 60s has quadrupled in value the past 10 years. It's unsustainable.

I don't think this a high-risk investment. The prices of these will only continue to increase as it ages. At worst, in 5-10 years you will get your money back. I'm going to guess the price will at least double, though.kypdurron wrote:Depends ... if I was a football star I'd say hey that thing is paid off in 3 months, so whatNarco Martenot wrote:It's an investment. Would you say it'd a high risk as investment? I mean can prices increase forever for that sort of shit? That idea of about 12 people on earth that are the actual market for guitars priced as fairly big luxus houses is not too far off, you might think they all already have one, and in comparison to that size of market, there must be a ton of vintage LPs out there
The person who buys this might not even be a guitar player or even know how to play one, and it will probably stay in a safe. But you never know, there could be a serious guitar player who is fairly rich, and is willing to spend their life savings on their dream guitar or something. Or maybe it's just Jimmy Page.

been watching the price since $75,000. Amazing what these instruments go for but I do believe one like this will be worth millions one day.
$162,100
and the reserve is still not met... JEEZ!
The Japanese are some of the biggest collectors of vintage guitars in the world. One of the world's most known burst collectors is Japanese.Mike wrote:With the increasing dominance of the Japanese, Chinese and Indian economies I don't think that having a '59 Les Paul can really be considered a dead cert for future profit potential, especially at the prices they're selling for now.
I won't crack any jokes about Paul McCartney and the one legged whore who seems to have a pipe line in to his wallet still.
As for investments and this not lasting for much longer unfortunately when people get money (in Mikes example, china, india, etc) they ask people already at the top what should I invest in. And they will turn around and say wine, art and guitars. It seems to be a self fulfilling prophesy and a case of one upmanship across the world.
Still, Epiphone have just released their "tribute" to the 59 for around £500 so that might be a way for us to example something like what this might be like. Its a shame though, like any tool it should be used and these guitars are only famous because of the people who played them in the era they were made

We're just starting to have the same threads over and over.
I feel like I heard this exact same debate over bursts six months ago so let me copy and paste.
