purely from a shallow, aesthetic point of view, i think it's a good choice.

now you just have to get him into a pair of fishnets and a girdle and you'll be sorted...

Now, since I missed out onthe redburst Jag I fancied...

I'm in the market for a Strat. Since I've had nothing but good advice from here, I now won't buy any guitar without consulting the sages of shortscale.

After seeing how nice the Classic Player Jazzmaster looks in black/tort, I've decided that's the way I want to go.

Doog's strat is also fuuuuuucking loooovely. If that makes me a plagiarist then so be it

Options:

1) Easy.

MIM Lonestar Strat

Image

Looks good, decent pickups... could get one for about £450 ($690)

2) Mediumn (sic)

Black USA Standard Strat and change the pickguard, wouldn't mind a used one ('Highway One/American Special/Road Worn' any better value?)

ImageImage

Value is the name of the game here. And also patience.

3) Hard.

Build from Parts.

Image

First time project.

Consider I don't have a scooby about what's good and what's bad... I could end up buying a donkey. I don't even know what I properly like.

However, I'd learn a massive amount... possibly become a better guitarist for it

Also, there's the risk of fucking it right up. You don't learn without making mistakes.

So how do I most efficiently get a great looking/sounding/playing strat? WAT DO?

Does anyone in your band now or have they ever at one time worn an armsock?

Not as far as I'm aware.

The only one who'd get away with it would be Corran.

Image

Eternal ridicule and possible public execution would await any of the guys who attempted to do so.

Now, about them Strats.... or pics of hot girls in arm warmers. You decide.

if the lonestar is £450 you could probably bide your time and pick up a used USA one for £500. but if you're fussy about colour... or you could get a cheaper body and neck and stick decent hardware in.

might be better posting this question in the other guitars forum, some folk here seem to ignore the whore house in case they stumble across people's poetry, i reckon.

It seems you are correct. I'm hiding my noobishness from Google in here, though. I don't really mind if no-one reads it.

So, I went and played a few Strats... nothing grabbed my attention in terms of feel or sound.

I actually preferred the neck on the American Standard compared to a Custom Shop 60s Strat {LANK} - There's no question that it sounded hugely better though.

So the Strat idea is on the back burner for now. I might still put one together from parts for the sheer experience.

I'm now considering saving up for an AVRI/Thinskin Jag/Jazzmaster.
► Show Spoiler
We had a sound engineer come in to help us set up the room, as Corran was finding it hard to hear herself amidst 4 noisy boys.

It's the best £50 we've ever spent. Everything is set up as close to perfect as we can get it and the sound in the room is vastly improved on what we had.

We can also do live recordings into ProTools now. The whole thing has re-energised our practices and we're writing better songs as a result

there was an AVRI jag in live music(?) (the one near scayles that isn't scayles), think he wanted £800 for it but you could see if he'd knock something off. sunburst though, that's the only thing.

the thinskins look cool, but you could get a vintage jag (admittedly in a non-sexy colour) for what they cost.

This one?

If so, I might go along and see if I can get a wee play of it at some stage

This will happen. And maybe in the form of a mongrelstrat, too.

Fuck it, a good idea doesn't have to be original.

I've been watching videos of Joey Santiago tonight as well... I need to teach myself how to octave/unison bend properly

Whilst doing this, a youtube video of you doing the Charlie Brown theme was in the search results. Disgustingly impressive.

Doog has stolen every good idea I've ever had about two years before I got anywhere near it.

Just for that picture, I decided to have a listen to Motorcrashes.

And I'm glad I did. It sounds a lot stuff I'd listen to, quite dark sounding but uplifting and melodic in places... and there's a really nice consistency in the rhythm, too.

Thank you very much

News Update:

1) Cello Corran has left the band, she's too busy with other commitments and unable to put the time in, might still return in a guest capacity. Band to continue as 4-piece

2) Considering a name change - some other band has 'Empires' on iTunes. Shite.

3) Gig coming up on Friday, with at least 50% of the set being new, looking forward to it

4) Booked in to record our first single with a Recording Engineer we're desperate to work with, should be sorted by early July

We'll be back in Edinburgh soon enough, sir

Will try to get someone to set up the camera again... might grab a few more vids.

From experience, Bathgate contains a large percentage of the undead walking the streets on a Friday night. It's probably best for your own safety

So, we got the masters of our first track back (as posted in the diary thread)

We've used Emubands to do our digital distribution, it's likely going to be download only for now and then included on an E.P. further down the line

We've a couple of really interesting things going on the background which are TBC, so keeping under my hat just now

One more day of work then Wickerman festival... I wonder how we'd go about getting our song played between bands in the Solus tent?

Really like the stuff I've heard, definitely got tinges of American Football about it, intentional or not!
