That PS300 is one of the few guitar amps where you can actually damage the tubes by not using the standby switch properly.

Anything in the Fender school is probably what you're looking at. A higher-power Ampeg, maybe? An old SF Bassman or Bandmaster head would be ideal. Sound City may also be something to look into, as they are quite similar to Hiwatts.

yeah i wanted to drop sound city, they're failry cheap here don't know about where you're at.

600w tube for a guitar seems overkill. i mean i like loud but you have to be able to push an amp to get it to sound awesome, pushing 600w seems a bit...ambitious. or expecting a lot from your band members and your crowd. you'll have sparkle clean cleans though, but your dirty sound will be only half as mean as it could be with a pushed amp.

I gig with a 12 watt tube amp and have never found it wanting.

Two knobs= no dicking around!

+1 on the Musicmaster amp, or any other Silverface Fender above the champ and maybe the princeton class. If you don't need versatility from the amp itself, you can't go wrong with these.

I only play my Rocker 30 on the dirty channel, all my dirt comes from pedals so no need to use the drive from the dirty channel. I set the gain just below where it starts to break up so that when I add dirty the extra volume will allow the amp to add a bit of it's own drive. The clean isn't as 'clean' as the Fender amps I used to own but I really like the sound and I don't play clean that much anyway so it's not a problem for me.

It does say 600W peak music power, not genuine watts.

i almost bought one once it was fairly cheap, 300watts ? 600 or 300 for a guitar it's still overkill, you're never gonna have the volume knob past 3 without shitting your pants lol

I dunno if it's just the fact that my musicmaster amp needs serviced, but i can't get it loud enough to use as my main amp channel. I can generally get it to about 5 before it starts to fart out a bit when you slam a fuzz pedal into it. If you're just after cleans it's good though.

I'm bidding on the Musicmaster Bass Amp on ebay, I hope I can snag it for practise at home.

How queer. Did you replace the stock speaker? At rehearsal mine is at about '2'. I did change the tone circuit though, which might affect overall volume.

you also need special angled cabs to run it. or risk starting a tear in the time space continuunm

nah, not yet. what speaker did you opt for in the end, again? i should really think about the tone circuit mod, seeing as it's pretty useless as is. need to get that fuse fitted too... and fit a strap of wood across the back to stop the toobs getting smashed in the back of the van... and get the caps changed...

Your best bang for the buck if you are playing shoegaze is something loud and clean....then you can use all your pedals.

Silverface twin reverb would by my recommendation. Also Musicman amps, bassman heads.

I fitted a Celestion Century Vintage (one of those with neodynium magnets, so it's very light) I think they're rated at 60 watts. The Harvard tone circuit is a definate improvement. I do worry about the tubes though. I lie the amps on their backs in the car though, so they're safe enough travelling.
