nice score, good price. although not a common feature, i've seen three myself probably the same ones as the previous poster. keep in mind that fender made over 200,000 mustangs from 64-70, ive seen three "rare" blue sparkle mustangs and 4 comp red lefties there is even that comp red with all gold hardware that changed hands a couple of times about 8 years ago.
the holy grail of mustangs is the lefty competition orange. i have yet to see one in the wild. that or a fender mustang in other custom colors from the era. even though the color chart said "not available" there MUST be mustangs in shoreline gold, sherwood green and charcoal frost out there
yeah, comp oranges aren't that rare, just expensive most of the time. give me LPB any day (except sundays and thursdays, then i'll take just about anything).

Auriemma wrote:I never heard of the stripes going all the way around.
When did they do this and how many?
Some of the earliest ones made had continuous stripes, so around Jan. / Feb. of 1969. It is unknown how many were made this way, or exactly why they stopped. I guessed it was too much work for Fender to get the stripes to line up at the body edge, but it could have been other reasons. So far all examples of continuous stripes I've seen have been on red mustangs.

Very early on and very few.
When I used the term 'holy grail', I meant for me and my collection. Sure Lefties are rare, but what the hell would I do with it? Stare at it I suppose.

Hey Mark, If you don't mind could you post up a couple pictures of the one you had? If I remember correctly it was in much better condition than the one in this thread.

Bought this about 5 years ago off the bay. It was very clean, had klusons, and a gold decal. Regret selling it every time I think about it.
Man that thing was clean.
Got any shots of where the front and back meet up? I would like to compare them when mine comes in.
I got a message from the seller and it's shipping out tomorrow. I'm guessing it will be here either Friday of Monday.

yeah, it'll be really interesting to compare the two.
That is so totally cool!

I don't think I'm going to. The guy said that besides a fret job, this guitar is completely original and I don't think I want to break the solder on it. Having said that, if I open it up and the electronics have been changed then yes it's getting a hotrail :}
It came in the mail today!
I'm still at work and will try to get pictures posted tonight when I get home. I must admit, I'm pretty relieved about it. Before sending the dough I did a background check on the guy (it all checked out), but still sending money to a complete stranger is about the stupidest thing I've done in a while.

The first time I sent money to someone from the boards I was super nervous about it. That was like 5 years ago when I bought my compstang reissue from Blane in the Jag-stang days. Other than the US postal service losing the body for about a week and accidentally sending it to california, there were no problems. And it's turned out that pretty much everyone on here has been great to and very trustworthy to deal with. I would be extremely hesitant about sending money over craigslist though.

And that is exactly what I did. Hotrod offered to grab it in person for me, but I ended up sending the money to the guy off craigslist.
I kind of feel like I dodged one here.

Totally. I would have opted to have hotrod get it for me, I just trust shortscalers more than I do normal people I guess. haha!
I haven't had a chance to plug it in yet, but first thought is the neck contour is the beefier baseball bat type. I can also tell the previous owner REALLY liked incense, the thing wreaks of it. Can't tell if it's the case or the guitar.
