Our singer is into all these kind of bands, a lot of the sound is down to the tuning and usually pushing old valve amps. Fuzz pedals are more likely to get you in that zone than straight distortion. The guitarist in a band i played with the other night got this sort of sound with a Tubescreamer pushing an old Matamp head.

A Matamp head with a bass cab is something I am going to need to get in the future.
