I'm not gonna recommend it in anyway, haha, but as I said, those are the only differences. I don't think there's any reason it would harm the amp.

the reasoning behind the differences is because the guitar signal is amplified; so any low-level noise the cable picks up, will also be amplified. not good. so cable is shielded. the speaker signal has already been amplified so a little low level noise that the wire picks up will be practically imperceivable. so, no shielding.

I used to have one and it sounded like absolute shit and was pretty poorly built.
I'm a very far cry from a tone purist but that thing was brash, even by my standards.
I thought I'd be saving money but I sold it at a considerable loss within a week of getting it.

Bite the bullet and get something good, you'll be glad you did.

I bought a Behringer cab in 2004 for $200, practically new. I thought it sounded terrific! It was my ultimate workhorse until it broke on me last year. 4x100watt jensens were incredible. The new behringer cabs have bugera speakers and I've heard they're terrible.

Take this all with a grain of salt, I like the sound of solid-state overdrive.

Sorry To get a little bit back on topic here (it's all about me mother fuckers)

a buddy of mine has a Marshall 1960 cab for $500 and a vox cab for $300 they are both "b" cabs I beleive 8ohm 100 watt, so when he gets back from tour in mid July I'll take my Vox ac100 over and check them out

just wondering what your thoughts on that would be

Stock 1960's are a sure shot.
Those GT1275's aren't my favourite speakers but they hold their own. Especially for high gain stuff.
You can always change them out, either all at once or progressively, it'll probably always sound good.
The cabs are definitely road-worthy. If I had my pick, I'd probably never choose one but in a pinch or at the right price, you can't go wrong.

I think $500 for a used one is a bit much but I've seen what the cab situation is where you're at and in comparison, I guess it's not too bad.
I say try to wrangle ot down to $400 and you have a pretty good deal considering the circumstances.

No opinion on the vox but lower tier voxes generally have Wharfedale speakers in them, you'd be better off with the GT1275.

I agree $500 is a bit much, I'm also going to check again with l&m and see if they have any rental cabs they wouldn't mind letting go.. But that is iffy as well

However I'll test them both and try and talk him down to $400

good plan.
I hope the dude with the $350 Mesa comes trough though.
Provided it's stock and that the impedance corresponds to your needs, that'd be a pretty good deal.

Aren't 1960's switchable between 8 and 4 ohms? Or is it 8, 4 and 16? Or have I imagined this entirely?

Either way, it might be possible to wire up whatever speakers you might think about putting in your existing cab in such a way that it allows you to switch between 4, 8 and 16. Someone better at juggling impedances than I am can probably advise here.

As for ex-rental cabs being iffy, I wouldnt be so sure. Marshall cabs are fucking tough, like. Everything else on the back of a touring truck gets flight cases, Marshall's are the only guitar cabs I've seen just being covered in a vinyl sleeve and stacked on top of each other (they often get flight cases, but sometimes not. Every other amp gets cased).

the rental cab is $500 as well..
but i was thinking of re-wiring my current cab to be 4 ohm (as is) and put in a second jack that is wired for 16 ohm
either way it will have to wait until a couple weeks as i'm not going to re-wire a cab two days before a show, and then another show next week
just in case something blows up (or whatever)
