Yep that's definitely true.
What I should have said is that it's worth going the extra mile trying to get these to breakup. It won't be easy and it won't be cheap but it can be done with the right sequence of preamp tubes, a dummy load, a clean boost and the right pickups. Whenever it does, i'll spit and snarl at you like a bobcat on booze.

After a quick pound-CAD conversion, I'd say 250 is a wicked deal if it comes with the 4x10. Apparently these heads sounded best with their matching cabs, but I've never actually heard them together.
If I saw one here in the local classifieds for around that price, I'd grab it just as a back up.

I dunno if this is considered "legendary" or not, but from personal experience, old Acoustic Control Corp stuff is awesome. I picked up a 140 bass head for nothing (it was literally given to me) and it's a great solid state bass head, albeit a bit noisy.

I don't think thats the same Bandit I had - mine looked different but I thought it was a 112 - it was 60 Watts. I hated my Bandit whateveritwas - some the worst distortion I've ever heard. Awful brittle tonez. The Zoom 2020 digi multi effects proabbly didn't help either and I was probably noob enough not to know how to dial the amp for nice sounds.
I don't know if they're legendary by the thread criteria but Selmer made amps that many British greats began on before getting their Matamps, Oranges and Marshalls. After some advice on amps from the tech geeks at Electrical,com they pointed me at old Selmers and Carlsboros as being amps they wished they could get their hands on in the States. I had a nice Selmer Treble n' Bass that had some sweet cleans:

I always loved getting to play with one, but that was probably as much to do with not liking the amp I was using most of the time (A Laney Hardcore Max, not a bad amp, but very cold sounding). My distortion sound was coming from a DS-2, so that tells you something of what I was playing and how fussy I was about my fizz. The Peavey always sounded good though, and always sounded great with a bit of chorus. It seemed to thicken up with chorus far more than any other amps I had access too, and with wah it didn't disappear.

That model is the one I have, and it is 75 or 80 watts or something. 100 watt 4 ohm output into an 8 ohm speaker.
Maybe Dingus didn't have a transtube model bandit? I'm pretty sure the pre-transtube bandits we around 60 watts.

B_Paul, I expect the cleans on it where just fine but back then I was all about the 'stortion and totally wet behind the ears as to tones and stuff. I just knew the dissortion wasn't my cuppa! I'd like to have a go at one again and see what my ears say now.

- Tube, 120 watts.
- I've seen a few of these in Ontario for a really decent price.
- Apparently they go for a JCM800 sound, but don't really get there.
- A real work horse. It has a bad ass name too.
I love hearing about the old peavey amps. that stereo chorus looks awesome, was it built to rip off a jazz chorus? (seems like)
I've heard great things about the old VTM series...

I used to play trough a Butcher, in my old band.
It was awesomely loud and yeah, pretty much just like you said, It'd go about halfway up the dirt scale of a JCM800 and then not get any dirtier, just louder.
Other memorable Peavey amp: The Roadmaster.
Sounds like a VTM but it's twice as loud.
I think teh Thurstonz played these throughout most of his career with SY.
