Actually it was the steel wool pad the came with my cheap little Black & Decker mouse sander. It's for buffing. I'd say any fine steel wool would work. You would have to level everything out with sanding first then buff it out with the steel wool.

I used Deft gloss lacquer.
Smells like Rock n' Roll
