The Combo 600 is beautiful but to be honest unless I saw one sitting in a shop for under a grand I probably wouldn't buy one.
Well those are worth a whole lot more than a grand, closer to $5000 or more and the Combo 800 and 850 go for $8,000 to $12,000.
Yeah, I realized that after my initial statement of thinking I could find one for less than the Fano. For some reason I was thinking they were in the sub $2000 range like many of their other vintage single pickup models. I still think $2500 for a copy is absurd no matter who's making it (besides Rickenbacker).
I wish RIC would just step up and start making some of these old designs themselves again (if they're still legally able to at this point).

He's just making them in small batches now. You just have to ask him about them.

He also makes toaster pickups.

woah, those Nelson guitars are cool. I would rock the black one.
Indie guitars make some Rickenbacker style guitars that are still available:
Not too bad looking.

IIRC the Indie guitars are not available for sale in the states, not sure about Canada. Usually their price tag of around $700 USD plus shipping overseas is enough to deter would be buyers. The quality is most likely on par with other mid range korean/chinese made guitars.
Your best bet for the bass is probably to try to find an old Hondo, Greco, or Ibanez for around $500.

Thanks, I quite often search ebay for 4003 copies. I don't think many crop up on UK ebay.

Dumb question, maybe, but I'm still new to guitars: Why doesn't Rickenbacker make any sub-$1000 guitars or entry-level models. Is it due to limited production or the materials they use?

Rickenbacker has a strong belief in keeping jobs at home, so you'll never get a "budget" line Rickenbacker made in Japan or Korea or wherever.
Check out their website for information on their assembly and wood selection

Really it's harder to imagine them making a guitar any simpler than the 330.
A Rickenbacker 330 is about $1400 brand new in any color you want if you have a good RIC dealer.
A Gibson LP standard is nearly twice that. I think they have fantastic value for the dollar, and they hold their resale value more than any other guitar on the market

Thanks for the info and the links. I've wanted a Ric even before buying this first guitar. Something to save towards...

The Dillion line from JSD Guitar Shack has some great ric copies. The pictures above are cool, but this one shows how they nailed the headstock design:
I hate the indie headstocks, they look really lame to me.

Different strokes for different folks and all but I don't find the Indie headstocks to be as offensive if they could be.
They remind me of something between a Rickenbacker Combo series and a Hofner bass
The truth of the matter is you're really not going to fool anyone with either bass, considering the bridge and bridge pickup. And even though they might be legal to sell in some countries, they will carry about as much street cred as a counterfeit beenie baby.
And this is coming from someone who owns both a Rickenbacker 330 and a pretty convincing knock off of one.

Yeah it always seems to be the fugly headstock that has killed my interest in many a guitar or bass.

For some reason, I assign more street cred to rickenbacker copies.
But I do prefer the older ones, hondo, el degas...

Does anybody make a worthwhile "Lennon" 325 copy?
