Some finishes take dings better than others. The gloss black of my Aerodyne Jazz Bass and Telecaster, for example, will not age well, and any dents and dings look terrible. I have other black instruments where dings look just fine though. Other finishes take on dents and dings like a champ, and look awesome.

But, yeah, first ding in any instrument feels TERRIBLE, but after that, it's not so bad :P

I hate damaging my guitars, I get all upset if I do.

interesting, i think it's worse if someone else makes the dings, or the previous owner(s) made the dings before you bought it. I was looking at a nice les paul custom on yahoo auction that was pretty cheap, but i was put off by the lacquer cracks and small dings in the neck. My 58 RI les paul is free of dents/dings, but i rarely play it and always keep it in the case. It makes me wonder if someone like jimmy page has dents in the neck of his LP.

i love when my guitars get banged up. i don't give a fuck. i will bang the headstock on cymbals while my drummer gives me the bird. WE DGAF.

i've taken light grain sandpaper to the back of every guitar neck i've owned and i'd do it again. i've done the canned air trick to all my guitars with poly, and the finish cracks look bad ass. i accidentally dropped my strat down the stairs when i was drunk, and it broke a tone pot and cracked the pickguard and i'd fucking do it again.

Sorry but...what is the canned air trick?

I'm guessing that if you hold the can upside down and spray it on the finish, the freezing causes the poly to crack.
