nah it wasn't about differentiating from the mustang it was about making them cheaper. the bronco style pickguard used less parts. also, they switched to strat knobs on all the shortscales at the same time.

I like both variations.

guitar on the left: ignore the fact that it has a 70s pickguard on it, it's a 60s body.
guitar on the right: a late 70s body.

What year did they do that? I was on a MM history site and they made no mention of it. Was that for all the student models?

It's funny that the "pretty" body has the "ugly" pickguard and vice- versa.

about 76 or so. I think it was the same time they changed the tele "notch" on the upper bout of the tele. none of the shortscale websites have much of any info about the 70s guitars. they are the ultimate underdogs of fender guitars.

Oh man, that is kinda ugly. They should have used the MM Bass pickguard on the guitar instead. That was a nice guard style. I actually prefer it to Mustang Bass pickguard.

1976 is when they went to the Bronco pickguards and lost the metal control plates

Here is a great website to check out:

I just saw this pic on that page:

That is nice. If I find one this nice, I would not Duo it.

Nothing wrong with making it a Duo if you get one that already has the Bridge route. MM used the same bodies as Duo until they discontinued the Duo in 1969. Some time after that quit doing both routes on the body.

There's not really anything wrong with putting a bridge pickup in even if the route isn't already there.

i think it might have been slightly later, my '76 was the 'classic' style (for want of a better term) and i've seen '77s the same. i always took it to be a '78 onwards thing.

I don't know. I feel like the fact that every MM owner wants to Duo makes it even less appreciated. If I had a nice MM, I wouldn't want to Duo it.

MM forces you to work the knobs to get your tone versus switching to another pickup. It's completely different from my Jaguar and Baja Tele which is one of the reasons I love it so.

lots of people have musicmasters locally. shits weird.

id like to start with a bronco myself but ive been damn broke lately.

ive never played one. how does the mustang type body feel? i have a jag so i know what the scale is like.

With the same scale and offset body, it sits in the same place as the Jaguar/Jazzmaster, but the smaller body is fits really nice and you can get it really close to you. Very comfortable. Musicmasters are the best deals out there, but a Bronco is really nice as well and I want one down the road.

Would you say the tone suffers?

damn I wish I had $400 laying around.

Not sure what you mean by tone suffering. I assume you are asking whether the tone is affected negatively due to the smaller body. Not at all, just different. Great guitars.

Cool. Focus on playing not switching pickups. My pup turned out to br. Rare strat pickup that sounds good.
