I used to use my Alesis SR-16, but I start in Garageband now. Three ways to do it in MIDI:
1) Set up MIDI track. Find drum loop that's close to what I want. Tweak tempo. Then edit/move beats until it =is= what I want. Loop-dee-loop.
2) Set up MIDI track. Choose drum patch in Garageband. Type Command-Shift-K to bring up the keypad/keyboard dealie. Tap around on keys to find a sound I want. Start recording, and tap away at keys for a few bars. Open track editor and put in the other parts I want (kick, hat, whatever) and tidy up what I tapped in. Loop loop loop loop loop.
3) Same as #2, but use my USB keyboard controller to tap things in.
Later on if I'm going to use the fake-drum track as a "click" for live drums, I go back and add a tambourine sound on off-beats: one AND two AND three AND four AND..... The tambourine really cuts through on the headphones while I'm drumming. It sounds like some weird tambourine ska polka, but the off-beats help me stay in sync while drumming.

are the best! MAKES all vintage roland drums
cheaper for the rest of us
I'm just saying.. not an essential purchase right away,
but it has more than enough merits to be mentioned over over over!

yep.. i wish i had one of any of those mentioned..
I've played with them at the studio before. amazing.
yes too expensive for me at this point, but still dreaming

i use a copy of sonar producer 7 that cakewalk "loaned" me. that has session drummer which mike and dots turned me on to...and i'm SOOOOO glad they did. very intuitive, and you can add your own midi clips you find or write or whatever to really trick up what the drums do...very awesome. i want it inside me.

Yeah once you get the hang of setting up patterns and using the "wrong" patterns for the kit you like it sounds great.
