Honestly, look into getting a tubescreamer.
Maxon 808 is widely used in metal production, but a ts-7 or similar should work. Turn the level up, but keep the 'gain' down almost off. This will hit your amp's preamp section with more mids than usual. Mids are the most important shit ever when you start working with heavily saturated guitar tones.
AMPS
You mentioned megadeth which would be a tight aggressive sound. When I think of megadeth, slayer, and other 'thrash' bands, I always think of a boosted JCM800. Kerry King of Slayer has been using jcm800's for fucking ever. I want to say Dave Mustaine did too, not sure. Marty Friedman used a Crate Blue Voodoo for a while in Megadeth. If your into more modern metal sounds, there are pretty much two base tones - Mesa Dual/Triple Rectifier and Peavey 5150/5150II/6505/6505II. There are variations in the Rectifier versions, most metal production dudes prefer the Dual over the Triple, don't remember why. If your looking at the 5150 and it's brethren, most prefer the non-II versions.
HOWEVER, there are now cheaper high gain options thanks to Bugera and the like. look into these, you can get a used bugera etc for like $300
Bugera 6262 = Peavey 5150 series
Bugera 333 = Peavey XXX
Bugera 333xl = Peavey JSX
Bugera TriRec = Mesa Triple Rectifier
B-52 AT-100 = Mesa Triple Rectifier (similar)
I really Ola Englund's amp test vids, he properly mics them up and puts them in a full mix so you can hear what that shit will actually sound like. He uses a Mesa Roadster 2x12 cabinet.

>>> You want vintage 30's
Nowadays the standard go-to cabinet is a Mesa/Boogie Standard 4x12. Even though it's called 'standard' it is actually oversized compared to the typical Marshall cabinet, the Mesa Traditional is has Marshall dimensions. Some of these have special versions of Celestion Vintage 30's. They sound thick and smooth, i really like them dawg.
Orange 4x12, these typically have more of a focus on the mids than the Mesa cab, and sometimes lots of low end.
Marshall 4x12 etc.. You have probably played through something like this before, but it may have had Celestion g12t-75's in it. Try one with v30's and you might like it better. Less low end and smoothness than the Mesa will have.
There are a ton more options here as well. Vader cabs fucking kill for live use but a lot of folks don't like the studio tones from them. Other notables include Framus, ENGL, Bogner, etc...
