I tool off the neckplate and..........................nothing! Nothing under the neck, on the plate, anywhere. No markings at all!!!
So, I say it's a rare one of a kind prototype non marked
Fendibsonbacker More or Less Paul made in Japan!!

Some similar looking stuff here, yeah seems like they were all made in the same factory for a number of brands. (them often sold through department store catalogues like JC Penny etc)

Dweez it BOOMS. Louder than my Thunderchicken and a cool tone. Definitely worth the $25 investment.

Just for the information, here is a response I got yesterday in a different forum:
"Thats a nice bass, and old, really old. One of the earlier LP shapes introduced by Japan. The "police badge" neckplate is an indicator for Teisco Gakki, Tokyo Electric Instument and Sound Company. That badge stopped being used around 1968 when Teisco was aquired by Kawai. Even though this isnt an Ibanez, its still a very cool old axe my friend. Note the rounded fretboard, those were on most MIJ lp copies from 68 to 73. Hang on to that old girl, for the price of dinner at macdonalds, thats a keeper!"
