1x12 Cabs
Moderated By: mods
I played one of of the smaller ones and it seemed pretty damned cool at the time (but again they were cheaper too). It's a shame becasue if they could have kept the price reasonable (say 250 for the 200 watt with the 1x12) they could have had a huge appeal. 550 for it is way over waht it is worth. Pick up a powerblock and a 1x12 for half that.
They say great minds think alike....Sometimes we do too...

Oh, didn't know that about the cleans. I was so impressed by the one I was playing with. I had to keep turning around and checking it was the same size as it was when I'd looked at it last, there seemed a proper, rolling, low-end, rumble off it which is my sort of thing. Definitely didn't sound like a tiny box with a 10" speaker in it.Doog wrote:Yeah, I was looking at these before I picked up the VS100R, as it goes. From what I read, the clean or 'Jazz Chorus' channel (ie, the one channel I'd use live) was A LOT nicer on the discontinued 80X model, compared to the current 80XL model.BacchusPaul wrote:I realise I'm a wee bit in love with these amps at the minute, but would a Roland Cube not do as good a job and be handier, maybe?
That said, I might give them another look- a small all-in-one solution would be pretty nice. I had to make a little "tone control" patch cable to use in the FX loop of the VS100R to dial out the fizzy, harsh highs that were always present, hopefully the same won't be needed with the Cube since there's no fx loop.
It occurred to me that it made a lot of other amps suddenly not make any sense.

Re: 1x12 Cabs
I have a half-closed back Harley Benton you can have for free if you want. I'm sure you can make it closed back if you want.Doog wrote:Quick question for ye, Shortscale: how do closed-back 1x12 cabs compare with 2x12 closed-back cabs?
I'm fed up with having a massive cab I can't transport myself (not owning a car) but also find my open-backed 1x12 combo lacking a little in the 'focus' and 'punch' department, especially when recording. Is there any comparison?
I'm really considering having just a small 1x12 cab to use with a Crate Powerblock or similar, which would also allow me to keep hold of my Marshall DSL50 head for old times' sake.
It sounds fine to my ears.
Seriously, thanks so much for the offer mate but it's cool.
Turns out the Marshall VS100 goes for about a ton on Ebay at the moment, making even the price I haggled (£220 vs original £240) with the Gumtree guy £120 more than I should really be spending before trying the thing out. Gonna sit pretty for a bit, methinks.
