Since reading this thread i got the DS-1 and PW-2 out tonight. Both quite fuzzy through the Orange TT using a Strat, more so the PW-2.
I've got an MZ-2 as well with built in slapback delay and chorus, easily one of the better Boss distortions.

Yep, got one too, still sounds flat and toneless (dull) though compared to other stuff I find.
A XT-2 is next on my list to try, not paying the silly BIN prices on ebay though, the odd few slip through on auction for about 30 quid.

The XT-2 is that red one MIT for a few years only. A "cut through" type distortion.
TBH I need to give the MZ-2 another go, although it does act as an unbelievable buffer in my chain, never had a Boss pedal act like it in that respect.

That second demo is really good, especially if you like Metal. It nails the Prong and Pantera sound exact.

I got a DS1 for ten bucks and sold it for five. That said, it was useless on guitar, but alot of fun on bass or vocals (with work)

i fell in love with HM-2 when i heard late 80s pink floyd era tone. anyone know the modern version of HM-2? and yeah. SD-1 and OD-3 is good for boosting your overdriven amp.

I love the sound of my DS1. But a friend told me, mine sounds surprisingly good. He has had one which had sounded like shit. [mojotag on] Mine is a Made in Japan [mojotag off]
I also like the sound of the OD2. But that's also an old pedal. You can't buy it anymore...

You just have to track down a HM-2 really. I picked mine up for €50 in near perfect condition. Great for a pedal from the 80s. Very happy. I guess the guy probably picked it up cheapish second hand himself and just took care of it.
A bit too obnoxious to be an "always on distortion"(unless you're running it into a very dirty amp, ala Opeth), but for when I do use it, it's one of my favourites for sure.

I think it's actually pretty cool for that Trashy sort of sound, might work in a post punk or industrial band. For anything else... unsure why they get used so much. But it's a classic sound I guess and some people are able to make them sound a bit better(usually through modding). Those higher settings on the tone knobs hurt my fucking ears though. Lower down there are some nice gravelly sounds at least.

Bought a Monte Allums modded DS-1 years ago, flipped it really quick for sounding like fizzy poop.
Speaking of fizzy poop, a good amount of me wants to mess about with an HM-2 one of these days, especially on bass.

I actually really like my OS-2. It was actually the first pedal i have owned. I think its good for slacky stuff and rythm (don't play much lead anyway)
Just a little dirt.
And as long as you keep the dial on the "overdrive" side you should be save. And i think you can get it extremely cheap.

I heard it was surprisingly cool, but after having a go through my Lunchbox I didn't really "get" it. It seemed kind of dry to me, and my LB usually makes things sound saturated. Maybe through a different amp/guitar.

if anyone wants a DS1 I would recommend buying the new MXR '78 BadAss distortion....its a modded DS1 with different clipping and from what I have heard sounds really good...
