I don't really care if it's painted on or not, to be honest, it looks the same either way. I think my epiphone dot has real binding but it has been painted over. You can the outline of the binding if you look really closely at the edge. It's not enough to tell if there is a split in the binding though.
i didn't mean to imply that i GAF either, but the japanese tele i played, it was clearly painted on. maybe it was fake, maybe i was high, and it was a FLender Squidcaster, who knows. it was $900, used at Guitar Center, and had painted, faux binding.

robbie, you have a dot studio, and none of those had real binding. i remember you pointing that out to me, but i can feel the lines in mine as well, but it's very obviously painted on. we should take a chisel to it to be sure.
