i second the coronado suggestion, or a '60s duo-sonic II. i'm biased though.

What are you thinking about.... ? ....there's so much out there.
Also, what is your more specific budget ? ...and what would you consider vintage ?
Personally I would look at oldish Japanese Fenders / Squiers / Tokai, Lawsuit Gibsons - Ibanez / Greco / Burny etc, if you want good value for money. Although they seem to be going up in value quite quickly... especially the more classic models with the finer specs. But I'm sure there is a deal to be found. Maybe £350-700. I think they'll rise quite rapidly in the next few years.
If you want to spend above that then maybe the more obscure late 70s Fenders like you were suggesting, at around £ 700-1000.
Either way these will be a wise purchase as you're unlikely to lose your money... far wiser than buying any 'new' guitar/
Just make sure you don't compromise on what you want if you want it to be long-term purchase. Go with your heart.
It's a buyers market at the moment.
PS I alway thought you were older.

Of course, why didn't we think to suggest a guitar that's virtually unavailable outside of the US, and likely to attract every collector in Europe if one were ever to come up for sale?

Mavericks are easily 2k and up when I've seen them, I think that qualifies as expensive as fuck

these are indeed very expensive and I would jump on a 2k maverick or custom
to the OP
I would buy if I were you:
- fender coronado (not to much and you will fall in love with the guitar although there are better sounding guitars, there are fewn better looking vintage original guitars)
- hagstrom viking (my 68 is one of the better guitars I have ever played. Ypu do have to get used to the thin neck)

I have looked at pretty much all Fender models, and they are by far my favourite guitars. But I don't want to get sucked in by the brand name and know they can be really expensive for what they are. That's why I made this thread really. There are so many vintage brands/models, I was just wondering what people thought were good value guitars to look out for.
On the flip side though the bigger brands, Fender, gibson etc would probably keep their value better. Or at least be easier to sell if I ever needed to. I'm not planning on selling it but it would be reassuring to know that I could do without losing too much money. I would probably feel more comfortable getting something I was familiar with, if that makes sense?
Budget.. hmm I guess £500-700 would be a good target. Although as you said, I would go with my heart if it was something I really wanted. Something around £1000 would be do able I think.
PS Nah, I'm only a wee boy. ha.

Depending on availability (I'd imagine they're less rare in Europe), you might want to look at the 60's Italian guitars.
I've been eyeing the Eko 500 series for a while and it seems like good condition ones hover around the 1K mark.

Honest answer? Save up a bit more to that £1000 target and you should be able to find a nice Mustang you'll love forever.

You can definitely find a 60s Coronado or Mustang (or duo/musicmaster) if you're willing to go up to a grand. Coronados are very nice guitars but they are also a little niche so don't be tempted just because there's a bit of a recent trend here and they look beautiful. You're unlikely to lose money on one but it might not be for you.
From the look of the thread it sounds like your main choice is between something Fender or something a bit more unusual. Deciding which of those appeals to you more is a good move from here.

Ah haha! Yes, there's no mistaking that guitar. Who is he/the band? Do they use the crazy synth pickup?

ha thought i recognised it. It's Alex Hewitt, from
Egyptian Hip Hop. I used to know them fairly well, jammed a couple of times with their other guitarist and went to a load of their earlier gigs. Haven't seen or spoken to them for a while though...
