thanks stuart for the recommendations but I think the price of the Keeley is a bit to much, in fact if I had that to spend I would probably get a 2nd hand M9 to help fill so many needs.

I'll be adding one to my product line in 2012 which will be along the lines of a modded Ross compressor. It'll be simple, and sound good, and probably cost around £100.

If I was recommending one now I would recommend a second hand Dyna Comp.

If I was going to get a compressor i'd buy a Boss CS3 cheap and get these guys to mod it - http://www.pedalmods.com/

They're very good, if you tell them how you want your compressor to sound they can take it into account when they do the mod.

I have a Dyna Comp, it's a more modern one, and i'm not a fan. It seems to remove bass from the tone and leave it too trebly. But then i'm well known for having cloth ears.

That is pretty contrary to my experience, I found the Dyna Comp pretty warm, especially when compared to Behringers Clone

One question on the dyna comp, is there much difference between the new ones and the old 70s ones. what is the 76 reissue like?

Anyone had any experience with the EHX compressor pedals?

Ross & Dyna Comps are almost idential circuits? Musikding do a kit for each for peanuts.

Dunno to be honest, I think it's more about component differneces like those old metal can CA3080s. I know I had finboys vintage one here for TB, DC jack and LED addition and it was lovely.

Im going now through a course of learning 'how to record' etc.. And there they said the compressors are very useful if You want for example
add some 'attack' to Your string pluck, or longer the 'sustain', 'decay' of the note..

So now I am thinking of getting one, for making something more interesting while fingerpicking and so on.

I was looking at the one made by Danelectro, but I was hoping for some more controls..
In soon future I might be using the effects in Logic Pro even in live situations because of the possibilities of control and getting just the right sound,

Compressors tend to remove high end and is a common issue I get asked about frequently.

@Mike: I've been using one schematic to repair/modify Dyna Comps for decades. The main circuit has remained the same as far as values and structure but as you mentioned the part types (i.e. the metal can IC) have changed a little. The newest version uses a LM13700 IC which is a dual version of the LM/CA3080 with buffers. Only half the LM13700 is used and they don't use the buffers so it's still essentially the same circuit.

The Dyna Comp is a decent pedal but if you are looking for studio quality, you probably aren't going to find that in a stompbox. You will probably need to look into a rack compressor which will also give you more control options.

Cool stuff. I'm basing mine on a modified Ross compressor I did as a Custom job for a Customer a while back, nothing ground breaking but just some of the tweaks and modifications that seem to be popular around and about. I remember not wanting to send it off to the guy as it was quite addictive to play.

Nice. I too am working on a compressor. Well, a compressor and noise gate in one. The main reason I don't use a compressor is the added noise. Mine's not a Dyna Comp/Ross circuit. It's based on component stereo system equipment so I'm hoping it turns out to be a high studio grade compressor in a stompbox.

the line 6 compressor fran sent me to try had a noise gate on it which made a big difference as well.
