My Rickenbacker sure wore in the high frets. It is Rose wood, I think. I think they use maple now and it is stained much darker.

I've played a few Gibsons with the baked maple fretboard and I felt pretty indifferent about the feel. Though to be frank (yes you can still be garth) I think most Gibsons have been craptacular in terms of quality for a few years now. I definitely like the obeche fretboards though they feel softer like rosewood but are smooth and play like ebony, extremely comfortable to play on.
