The problem is those cheap-o Duncan-Designed (rather than REAL Duncan) pups are just horrible. Muddy-sounding, poorly defined sound. Should never have been put on the HCVI. Terrible compatibility with the demands of this type of instrument.

The last wave of MIJs in the 90's weren't so great. So time will tell if these are worth it vs the new 2012 Hellcat VI which is vastly upgraded with REAL Duncan Jag pups and other features.
After the announcement and pics reaching my reading eyes, I've actually started thinking about picking up a CIJ Bass VI while taking a trip to Japan later this year with the wife , given that they make plenty to go around.
I've come full circle with my Godin A4 fretless (fantastic upright sound) enough to sell it, and wouldn't mind saving a Benjamin or two for the next 10 months to make sense of it all. Reissue MIAs from the Custom Shop were quite out of reach for the past few years (being at least $3000, when available), and are now almost $1000 more than that. The sheer tonal versatility and coolness of the thing when both thumped and picked blew me away when I played one of the CIJ reissues a few years back, it would actually be a new guitar that (unlike a Tele or two in the house I could easily shed) wouldn't be a redundant purchase of any sort for me.
I do remember hearing folks being rather ho-hum about them, but the one I played felt absolutely solid in my hands.

Also, it's worth noting that one night in the presence of Fredo's Bass VI opened my (lazer) eyez, with Pens laying down serious kurdtz to make the whole thing more special.

That would be a GREAT way to pick one up! With what you'll save it will pay for part of the trip.

Some mild use of it here:

Some wanky use here:

Bit of shittiness here:

Useable kinda depends on what you're looking to play. For standard basslines, they're kinda useless... but hey, for standard guitar licks they're useless too.

Hmm, really??
I've been playing these in shops for years, and love them. How much are you thinking of letting it go for?
