It kills me about the MM neck because it has so much mojo, but it is the thickest neck I have. Even more than my neck for my Jazzmaster project.

My Mullet-stang is a 70s Mustang but has a 1969 Mustang neck so its smaller. I am not sure I want to sand down the neck to make it thinner, though I could if I decide to completely refinish the neck.

I guess I was wanting to move this guitar because I wasn't playing it much, but that is mostly because I received 2 Mustangs within 2 months.

This guitar was a complete SS project and I really didn't want it going to someone outside so I think it's best that it stays here for now.

having played a number of vintage '69 necks, every neck is different. there isn't a standard size neck. They're all different. I've played necks from a '69 that were really thin and some that felt like baseball bats.

I know what you mean. Both the MM neck and the Mullet-stang neck are B profiles but the are nothing alike. 70's necks got chunkier too. I know Cooterfinger wanted the neck if I sold it so I might do that.

That seemed to be the general trend in the 70s - for necks to get chunkier - but not all of them did. My '75 Music Master neck is a B width, but it's pretty darned thin - noticeably more so than my '71 Mustang. I also have an original '65 slab board neck sitting unused - it's in gorgeous shape, but it only lasted 5 minutes on the guitar - it's too thick and U shaped in the profile for my tastes. Eventually I'll probably toss it up for trade for a different 24" neck, or just sell it. My favorite neck is the one on the SFG Duo Sonic II - it came off of a ~'94 MIJ Mustang, and it is similar to the '75 neck. Nice and thin from front to back, but not quite as narrow as some of the MIJ necks, which are almost A widths instead of B's, which is my general preference. Those early to mid-90s MIJ necks seem to be about the most consistent in terms of what *I* like - YMMV.

I don't think you can safely make any generalizations about neck thickness and profile though. There may have been trends in certain eras or time periods, but nothing you can say with absolute assurance about any of them - it seems there's nearly always exceptions. It makes finding a neck that you like much more difficult, especially if you're trying to do it from afar.

What year is your MM neck from? My 77 MM has the thinnest neck ive ever played!

1972 Music Master neck. When the word "MUSIC MASTER" had a space in it.

Thick necks are a deal breaker for me. To me, the neck is the guitar. If it's not vibing with me and it's not a guitar where I want to change the neck, then it's a goner, no regrets about it.

The guitar IS the neck. Too true.

Also surprised at this neck issue, as my 76 MM has a very thin neck. Joey, was going to say you're crazy, I got rid of my AVRI Jag cause the neck was too chunky compared to the MM. But Willie's comments make a lot of sense, so much variation during the CBS era. Maybe work out a payment plan with Ankhanu?

Thinking about it, still a lot of neck variation now. I was trying out some blonde VM JMs recently (FAO: hotrod) and found that one had a nearly flawless, thin neck ... while another sitting right next to it was fat and chunky and goddamn awful.

the only vm jazzy I played had a huge neck on it.

if you come across another one, give it a shot. you might be pleasantly surprised. playing two "identical" vm jazzys at guitar center was a very educational experience.

i guess i should say that the slimmer neck wasn't thin per se, but definitely comfortable. a good neck. the other was chunky as fukk.
