He started on a japanese LP copy, but his first Fender was a Mustang. He played the Mustang in a band he had called The Marked and in the very early new wavey Pumpkins too.taylornutt wrote:Apparently Billy Corgan started on a Fender Mustang. Interesting.
The story Corgan always told of his LP copy was that as a teenager he gave his blues guitarist dad (who played lead on "the last song" from the 33 single) all his money to buy him a guitar, since he didn't know anything about gear... his dad, part junkie and partly skeptical of Billy's guitar abilities, bought a way cheap guitar and spent the rest of Billy's money on drugs.
His sig Strat is based on the '70s hardtail one he bought to replace his first '70s strat when it was stolen, but he mostly played US reissue '57s with the Pumpkins, which he bought several of prior to recording Siamese Dream.

My favourite guitar of his was always the "Batstrat" '57 RI when I would watch vieuphoria as a kid. It was his main guitar for the SD sessions and his main live strat in the classic era.
