I feel like jazz basses are probably the best "jack of all trades" basses. I don't own one anymore, and I love my p bass and my rickenbacker, but a good jazz bass really is good for just about any style of music. Get a nice squier jazz bass, and a sansamp, and you're set for recording.

i was at the store yesterday bought a squier precision bass. anyway the frets were buzzing like hell and i returned it today and im gonna get a standard fender jazz bass!!

My bassist got a SS Jaguar recently and it's excellent, really nice sounding.

The Jaguar SS bass is indeed an excellent value and great player.

My first bass was a 70's Musicmaster with a Baddass bridge that I bought off a friend in the late 80's and that bass got me hooked on shortscales before I even knew what they were.

So for someone just starting on bass, as said before, you really can't go wrong with the shortscale Fender stuff.

They can be had cheap, cause they ain't real basses , and they play great.

Haha, dude I think every GC in America has had a mid/late '70s black/black MM bass for $500 at some point. I've seen them at my GC too, and a couple years back once saw 2 black AND 1 white one at my local GC competitor, $525 each for black, $575 for the white. As you say, all day long. That and '60s Gibson Melody Makers on eBay are my two bucket-list emergency vintage go-to deals.
