Thanks for all the input. I counted the notes in my sock drawer gear fund and it came to just over £500 so there's a big gap between what I can blow with a clear conscience and the asking price anyway. Still...

what about the refinished one in the classifieds? ok, you pay shipping and tax, but should still fit your budget and help a shortscaler out :)

They also enjoyed a fair few years of steadily climbing. It isn't surprising that with people less likely to buy high end guitars (and you have to consider anything over a grand high end even if a lot of that is due to the age) that ones that have increased a lot in recent years will have their top end disappear first.

I think it is a great price for a Comp Orange Stang. Competition Orange Stangs are very hard to find. Here is a really beatup one that just sold for the same price as the one on Gumtree (Link)

The same store has one in excellent condition for $2999 (link)

That's $1,623 in USD. I don't know about over in the UK, but here in the USA, that's a pretty darned decent price for an all original orange compstang. Actually, that's about what I'd expect to pay for one with a matching headstock in CAR.

However rare they are in the US, they're a hundred times rarer in the uk. You simply don't see them for sale.
