Only thing I will say about my Jag, I don't play it much lately since the Musicmaster as that thing is positively perfect. The Jag was my goto before, but it is just far heavier than the Musicmaster. It is always my backup guitar I take to my shows, though.

This is kinda out-there and complicated-sounding, but since you like your Mustang and Supersonic more I'd actually suggest trying a CIJ '62 style Jag instead of a CP. It's fret size, fingerboard radius and bridge assembly might be more to your taste, and it has a much different string tension to the CP, Mustang or Supersonic... they feel nothing like a CP Jag, despite the identical body/scale. They sound different too as the CP's pickups are hotter (though most don't like the CIJ Jag pickups either).

Hmm, now that is interesting; I didn't realise there was so much of a difference. They're pretty expensive though, right? I got my CP for £450 - in immaculate condition too. Part of me feels I should persevere with it 'cos I got it for a bargain.

Has anyone tried putting AVRI pickups into a CP?

I had an AVRI Jag for about a year and got rid of it. It was a beautiful guitar that sounded great, but for some reason I couldn't get along with the neck. However, I wouldn't be opposed to trying a different Jag in the future.

Definitely take time to think about. I went back and forth for 3 months before deciding the Jag had to go.

I love my AVRI jag. I love how you can get a range of tones similar to a Strat, Tele, and a Jazzmaster all within one guitar. I love the plinky tones too, and the tremelo is tops, rarely goes out of tune.
On another note, I really can't get along with any Fender with the 9.5 radius, so I imagine that may play a huge part in the jag falling out of your preference, that and the hot PU's, Paul may be on to something regarding your jag since the CP's are 9.5. I used to have a US made Strat with the Texas Special PU's and I could never ever get along with it as much as I tried. The combination of the 9.5 radius, the too hot pickups and that dreadful 2-point tremelo were too much. Ugh, I do not miss it, but it was a pretty shade Teal Green Metallic.

Was the neck too thin for you? I know you are a Musicmaster guy and like your necks on the chunkier side.

Totally this for me. Though in fairness that did take me several years! Going through the whole change bridge, buzz stop, revers those, route for humbucker, route for P90s, back and forth until I found what I needed/wanted. Now I wouldn't dream of getting rid of my Jag, just took me a while to get there.

Actually my MM neck is fairly thin. The Jag neck definitely felt chunkier. I think it was the neck profile on the Jag that I didn't like? Not sure, couldn't exactly pinpoint the problem, but just seemed silly to keep an AVRI around when I preferred to pick up the MM nine times out of ten.

I'm pretty sure you could come up with a CIJ Jag for the same money or less. The last one I bought was £350 with a Hiscox case, and that was before there was a glut of new shortscales on the market.

If you're going down the pickup switching route don't think AVRIs are the only game in town, though - there are loads of small businessmen out there doing vintage spec'd ones at reasonable prices.

my two jags are completely different from each other aesthetically apart from their shape and chrome. wouldn't trade them for the world even though i also go through phases of favoring one over the other.

I know more people who have started with a Jag and ended up with a Mustang than the other way around.

I gig regularly with a modded Squier 51. It plays, and sounds better than my Japan Jaguar and Mustang. I love the look of those two but they just aren't getting used. Makes me feel . Maybe it is the scale length and I should sell the two shortscales to get a Jazzmaster?

I love my Classic Player Jaguar Special HH. Now I'm wishing I had $2.8K for the Johnny Marr signature Jaguar. I just bought a 65RI Mustang and I really like it, but the Jaguar just seems to fit better and give me the tones I want.

i still play mine more than any of my others. fuck all that other shit

I can see that, because there's a definite overlap and there's no doubt the Mustang is easier to get on with.

Having said that I love my Jaguar. I think barring some kind of accident whereby I lose the ability to play guitar (any more than I already am impaired) or financial disaster, that I can't see myself selling it.

Well maybe if I find a nice old pastel one...

Keep it , set it aside for a few months and I'm sure you'll eventually evolve back to it . I do the same thing .. Don't want to play a particular guitar and you put it away for a period of time . Right now for me it's my Toronado and my Mustang bass. COme time though I'll gravitate toward them again . It just happens .. I would love a CP Jag . And if I had one my Jag Special would collect dust till I gravitated toward it again..

The only drawback to the Jag is its weight, which is why I got it some lighter friends to hang out with. So the Jag has been promoted to Admiral, and is now my studio guitar. TEH KURDTZ is now Captain of my ship, and the Duo Sonic is supreme commander of alternate tunings.

I stopped playing my Jag for practically a year at one point. Jazzmaster was getting all the love, then after saving up for a second Jazzy i picked up the Jaguar and fell in love with it all over again... now i have 3 and no Jazzmaster

Basically i'm just agreeing with everyone else, you'll eventually come back round to it.




...if it's of any relevance i had a Mustang before the Jag and that just sits in its case.
