Honestly, sick of tube amps and pedals fucking me about, being heavy and generally "sometimes sounding shit" for no reason.

I discovered long ago that I'm so weedy/lazy that 1x12 combos are my limit...I'm not getting a head+cab or Twin Reverb unless I have a roadie to help carry stuff. Too much hassle.

In the past few years I've started to notice people saying that modelling amps don't always sound like shit. In a cramped pub full of cloth-eared drunk people it's probably a decent compromise between sound quality and convenience.

All overrated in my opinion too.
Have you tried a Rocktek Overdrive?

This is the best booster pedal I've ever used. It's should work your tube amp into natural overdrive. It's got a great EQ on it, and adds a certain 'magic' to your sound.
Not strictly an overdrive, but if you used it right, you should get some awesome results. Factory seconds (basically paint chipped box) from $105. Can't go wrong man.

I used to play through a Super Reverb with my Jag and I acheived the sound you're looking for with these pedals:
Rat
Boss HM-2 (don't laugh, these can do thick overdrive quite well, just dial back the gain)

+1 More or less how i use mine.

There's always a Marshall Guv'nor Mk1 or Drivemaster (same pedal, different box), the 3 band EQ on them lets you get as thick or thin as you like.


...failing that, a RAT as always!

The tonality definitely suits some amps better than others; the 'rude' mids seem to work great with Marshalls but a lot less so with other brands.

fuuuu I was gonna say something like this exactly. I totally get where Benecol's coming from about the RATs.

I actually don't really like to use one with classic-style Fender amps, as much as I dig 'em with Marshalls. To me, throwing one over a scooped and clean type of sound actually is like the "butt rawk" setting on an old multi-fx. Same story when you send one into a solid-state amp. Their middy nature augments a dry crunchy "british valve" sound perfectly though... plus I spike my mids and run fairly hot when playing through a jumpered channel plexi. It seems silly NOT to use a Rat at times like that, just feels like footswitching to a second channel really.

I love the tweaked Box Of Rock clone Mike made me for my bass, and it sounds equally great on guitar. Definitely the most "amp-like" dirt pedal I've ever used.

The You Dirty Rat is lovely and thick sounding. In many ways, just like my best mate Dr Rob

Green muff ≠ overdrive.

I made a RAT/Violet Ram's Head Muff for a guy recently and the RAT side had a turbo/normal toggle.

I think both sides were ace, but the RAT in particular sounded beefy as hell on my Jaguar bridge pickup. So my vote goes to RAT

I think the Visual Sound GarageTone Drivetrain could also be a good choice. Only 60 dollars, they put in the same buffer as their higher end pedals, and bass and treble knobs, which is a triple bonus. Here's some sound clips from their site.
