So stripping the body caused me to find some interesting things. There was a thin layer of wood on the top and bottom of the body that came up with the paint.

A six or seven piece body... Good thing it will be a solid color.
Some of the seams were showing a little and just to be safe I pushed some wood glue in to the thin cracks and clamped it up to sit for a day.

I am going to seal it with z-poxy so I am not too worried about the little seam cracks. The z-poxy should seal it up again.

Glued in the dowel from where that one pickguard screw was.

Shit!! This is making me wish I had your wood working chops. That looks awesome.
The strips of wood were under the factory finish?
The guitar belonged to a punker before me and had anarchy symbols and shit on it. It really looks good, man. Can't wait to see what you do with it.

Also why not paint the cavity? Keeping a bit of history on the inside?

It sounds like they were laminated top and bottom from the factory. For the sunburst ones it makes sense with an eight piece body) but not for a solid color. I guess they just pumped them all out the same. LOL I guess this means this one will be slightly thinner.

I might keep some of the paint in it. Funny thing, Fender sprayed the CAR finish over the shielding paint... LOL Crazy Fender.

Sanded down smooth and a second (probably final) coat of Z-Poxy. I will flip it in six hours and do the back. Looking much better.

Impressive stuff.
So does this mean they're "made of plywood"?

It looks like a cutting board.

Honestly I would say probably. The body is seven pieces. (Now eight with the dowel.
![Very Happy :D](./images/smilies/icon_biggrin.gif)
) Never seen a body made of so many boards.
It does look like a cutting board. I can't wait to finish the sealing so I can get to painting. That is when it starts to look more like it should.

Dude, I'm seriously impressed... and now the thought of a natural Cyclone, with a black comp stripe + 3 ply Black/White/Black PG and black (or chrome) p'ups is going through my mind.
If Fender only made 24.75" necks with maple boards!

Could be cool. Would be better if someone made a new body though unless you like the cutting board look. As my woodshop buddy would say "this is a solid color finish body."

If the pieces look nice, I've got no issues with the cutting board look. Obviously one or two pieces would be best, but the right cutting board one would be fine by me.

If I was going to go cutting board, I would do checkerboard.

Could play chess on it.
Back is Z-Poxy'ed and drying. Tomorrow I will lightly sand it and it will be ready to spray with primer.

Yeah, I'm sure this is whats up.
On a lot of CIJ guitars (Jags/Jazzmasters) the sunburst ones were alder while all the other finishes were basswood.

I have a couple 3M sanding sponge/blocks I like to use. Not very rough stuff. Maybe 600 or higher? I like the sponge because it is fast and does the curves well without changing the shape.

Surprised they didn't laminate those ones. I heard blacktops and maybe classic player bodies are laminated like this. I saw a build thread somewhere where a person was stripping the body and found the layer like I did.

While I waited on the body to dry to get it's white on, I worked on getting some of the misted white spray paint the punk (previous previous) owner managed to get on the headstock while painting the body.. No idea how that freaking happened. LOL It actually came up pretty easily. I will do between the tuners when I wetsand the body.
The heel is all clean.

It wasn't bad, but I didn't want anyone to see that and think it was ME being sloppy with white paint. LOL I wouldn't ever paint a body with the neck on...
