But the albums say otherwise. DON'T UNDERSTAND
Well he did say he uses a Tele and LPjr on the albums, and only has the high action on the JM for leads... though he did use the JM's on the first 3 albums I suppose.

Maybe he's an arch bullshitter when dealing with the guitar fancier community. The aforementioned Japanese pedal thing lends credence to the notion. I'm not sure if i think it's funny or a bit hipster cooler than thou... Dunno.

Anyway, Sebadoh were better, and lou writes better songs.

Don't worry, let HNB break it down for you:
HNB wrote:He plays Jazzmasters live, but doesn't normally record with them. (Tele for lead and P90 Gibby for rhythm.)

His triple amp set up is set up like that to feel the air pressure from playing. (Uses smaller amps to record.)

His high guitar action on his Jazzys is mainly for doing solos and slide. For studio, his rhythm guitars have lower action.

I really liked that BASICALLY for his sound he uses one pedal for rhythm and one pedal for clean. I also liked that all his amps are always on. (They all also seemed to just have everything up to ten.)

but does it really sound hideously out of tune?

this video with chords up the high registers does sound a bit out but in a power trio setup i don't think it really matters.

Back in the day they were so noisy I dont think anyone would have noticed mild tuning issues. But I saw them a few years back and they have tamed things, no tuning issues to report either.

Fun fact: J is straight edge and always has been... he's the most stoned non-stoner ever.
