dumb emoticon
The soldered metal covers shield the pickup and different metals have different capacities that will lead to slight difference in the frequencies picked up by the pickup.

yeah that is why I like the neck with a cover but bridge without. neck sounds nice a little more muted and bridge sounds best when crunchy as possible.

I just got a good deal on a used set of BKP Nailbombs which are black open coil. But I also have a BKP Rebel Yell neck pup in my other LP that is Zebra that I think would pair nicely with the NB bridge. So...................at the moment am thinking of going for this configuration:

Will keep my work gold covers though and could stick them on some time.

So new pickups and guitar were united yesterday when we got back to Beijing. Also took the opportunity to change the knobs, though managed to crack one of the tone knobs around the rim....fffuuuuuu... Anyway, I really like the look, and am glad I went for this. The pickups are Bare Knuckle Rebel Yell in the neck and Nailbomb in the bridge.
The only annoying thing is that there's something wrong with the bridge pup/wiring. The output is ridiculously low...have to turn the amp up full to get any sound...clearly something wrong, I redid the soldering on the 2 wires I had changed a couple of times, but gave up when it still didn't work as it was late and I was big time jet lagged. Hope I don't have to rewire the whole thing or that the issue is with the pickup itself!

Not a fair comparison - check the DC resistance, the two models are different construction.

Finally fixed the bastard bridge pickup. After 3 resoldering attempts it still didn't work - I didn't think my soldering was that bad. Wired the old pickup back in, that worked - balls. Looked again at the new pup wires and found that the black and bare wires that had been twisted together to go to ground was in actual fact jus the bare wire with one strand of the black...grrr.... Stripped the wires back, resoldered the lot, works like a charm. Am glad the bloody pickup wasn't broken.
Anyway, love the Nailbomb, have got a marginally overwound version in my Seth Baccus LP and it sounds awesome. Really clear, but heavy and agressive at the same time. Clean tone is really nice too, and it cleans up well using the volume. Ideal.
This's what yer amp's for

For looks, stick with the gold. Those pups can't be whimpy...for enhanced tone & guts, use your amp and pedals...'65 Mustang pups can sound like beasts with the right amp settings & peripherals.
If yer just jonesin for a change, do it and have fun!
Cheers,
